It looks like Japan will select the EH101 as it's new SAR helicopter, following the choice of Canada, Sikorsky have decided not to offer the S92 claiming Japan had already decided on the Merlin prior to inviting bids and that their requirement was built around the EH101. This would be quite a success for the EH101 which looks like becoming a helicopter of the very highest class finally after it's long development program.

Everything that I have read has led me to believe that the S-92 has already been shelved..
I am a big supporter of Sikorsky but everything about the EH 101 seems to be a better copter. three engines Vs two (though the T701/401 is more powerful) the S-92 was just a redesign of the S-70(UH-60) adding a rear door and other little things.. started in 1979 the EH 101 has taken a LONG time to get the program up to speed anyhow I will shut up now

The EH101 development certainly has been painfully slow, sometimes it seemed like the whole program had just stopped
However now it's coming to maturity the end product definately is a quality product and probably the best helicopter in it's class, although whether even this fine machine was worth such a long wait is open to question![]() The UK has 44 ASW variants for the RN and 22 tactical transports for the RAF I think, but I think they'll order many more, namely; -more ASW EH101's, despite the Lynx upgrade the RN has made it clear they want more Merlin's long term -tactical transports similar to the RAF ones for the 3 RN squadrons which support 3 Commando Brigade to replace the Westland Commando -possible future AEW platform -The UK needs a combat SAR helicopter and the EH101 is a perfect platform -the RAF will probably order more, and given the horrendous problems with the Chinook HC2 and HC3 I wouldn't rule out the possibility of the EH101 replacing those troubled machines despite the newness of them I think there is also a large potential export market, although the NH90 provides tough competition, although nothing like as good as the EH101 the NH90 is smaller and cheaper and good enough for many countries. I tend to agree with Spetre about the S92, so far it just isn't cutting it. Another market is for the large commercial chopper market, the S61N is long in the tooth and a replacement is overdue, Justin |
