Question What's up with the Apache anyway???

I happen to really like the Apache, but why are they always crashing???

I read on CNN that we are using Huey Cobras to attack these Taliban and Al Qaeda dickheads? Why the hell don't we use the Apache? (or the A-10 for that matter?) Are they afraid it's going to crash?

Incorrect, Russ! The Warthogs are very much alive and well in the Air Force inventory. They are still in considerable numbers with the USAF, the USAF Reserves, and the Air National Guard. They were very active in Kosovo, working the kill boxes with RAF and Marine Harriers. They have all received an upgrade called LASTE (Low Altitude Safety and Targeting Enhancement) system which Warthog drivers just love as it's giving the 'Hog night vision. 2 years ago GPS was integrated into the weapons systems.

Lockheed Martin is currently working on integrating precision weapons such as the JDAM and WCMD for the Warthog. Service extensions should see the 'Hog serving until 2028. There's even talk of re-engining them with similar engines as the latest CRJ700/900 series regional jets.

What? are you smoking crack? no way in hell is it gone what with all the firepower it carries, and a gun that can saw a dump truck in half. the AF isn't going to have another weapons platform like that ever again. (well mabey)

What's worse, the Army's salivating for the A-10s should the Air Farce ever give up on them, but the Key West agreement of 1948 prevents the Army from getting them.

The Key West agreement gave certain spheres of influence on aircraft missions to the respective services:
  • The Army can fly armed helicopters, but cannot fly fixed wing combat aircraft. (And the Air Force pitched a royal b*tch when the Army came up with it!)
  • The Navy (and Marines) cannot fly heavy bombers, but they can fly tactical combat aircraft and some tactical airlift in support of the fleet or Marine expeditionaty forces.
  • The Air Force has the monopoly on heavy bombers, land-based ICBMs, strategic airlift, most tactical airlift, aerial refueling (except for the Navy when supporting their carriers) and most utility helicopters.

The bulk of the ground forces in the area are Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) which come complete with their own helo support in the form of CH-46s (transport) as well as Cobra gunships (typically AH-1Ws).

Although based on an older design than the Apache, the Marine Cobras are quite effective and lethal. The AH-1W is the only Cobra variant as far as I know that can use armor-piercing discarding sabot rounds (APDS rounds) in addition to the usual M197 cannon rounds. The late-model "Whiskey Cobras" also can ount wingtip missiles as well as the same Hellfire missiles that the Apache carries. Once the Marines complete the Zulu upgrade (making them AH-1Zs), you'll have one very nasty machine that's still compact enough to fit on the LHAs and LHDs of the amphibious ready groups.

The Apache, being a much larger gunship, would mean the Marines would have to carry less of them.

I'm sure we'll see A-10s in theater once good forward operating locations can be secured.

The AH1 does have certain advantages over the AH64, it's much smallerand lighter, cheaper to buy and in zulu form packs a lethal punch. That's not to say it's better than the AH64, just to say don't write it off, as it's still a pretty dangerous piece of kit. Speaking to guys in our British AAC, many of their engineers wanted the AAC to select the Cobra Venom, as they say it is much easier to service in battlefield conditions, also if they'd gone for the Cobra Venom they'd have got another Regiment, instead of 68 WAH64D's to equip 2 Regiments they'd have got just over a hundred AH1's to equip 3 Regiments for the same price. I don't know about Afghanistan, but in Yugoslavia one of the reasons battlefield helicopters were not fully utilised was fears over surviveability in an environment with quite an effective low level air defence capability. About crashes, I can't answer that one.
