me737,
Has anybody guessed your airport correctly? Somebody said Manchester another said Gatwick. I'd go with Gatwick or something in the UK anyway. Just wondering if I lost track of the thread what with everybody guessing Chicken's airport. |

Former air force base. Air National Guard unit in residence. Regional service only. Regional service provided only by US Airways Express. Jet service provided in the 1980s by an airline that got merged into another airline. Is that enough?

With your latest clue, I have narrowed it down to a former Empire Airilnes or Piedmont Airlines city. It just doesn't look like any airport I know or can make an educated guess. I thought it might be Utica, Elmira or perhaps an airport in North Carolina.
I think I will guess Utica, NY?

Now that's what I call dogged persistence, Lee! Unfortunately, you're incorrect- Utica, Elmira or anywhere in North Carolina.
Here are the clues again with a few more tossed in: Former air force base. Air National Guard unit currently in residence. Served currently by only US Airways Express. At one time in the 1980s served by 737s from Frontier Airlines. West of the Mississippi River. Aviation museum with mostly WWII aircraft is located at this airport. This airport is NOT in any Class B airspace. Does that help any?

Forbes Field (FOE) in Topeka, KS is absolutely CORRECT! How'd you do it, Lee?
This field has a lot of memories for me, I used to live approximately 4 miles from the end of Runway 13 (it's nearly 13000' long) and I would watch the KC-135As (yup, the old Water Wagons with old smoky J57 turbojets) of the resident ANG unit practice approaches- the 190th Air Refuelling Group "Kansas Coyotes". Back in those days the 190th was fragged to the Strategic Air Command and as such maintained at least one, sometimes two, KC-135s on alert status just beyond an underground bunker where the alert crews stayed. The residents of the city were much appreciative when they upgraded to KC-135Es. In the mid-1980s a small 3-gate terminal was built and for a while both United Airlines and Frontier offered 737 service. If I remember right, United's 737 flight was FOE-LNK-ORD and I think Frontier's flight went to DEN via ICT, but I can't remember for sure. That was around the same time Eastern set up a western hub at Kansas City International (MCI) and a locally based Twin Otter operator, Capitol Airlines, became an Eastern Express partner. Because of the light traffic and long runway, FOE was also used by TWA for practices. We'd see red twin stripe L1011s in the pattern and when TWA got their first 767-200s, they brought them out to FOE for practice. Gulf Air also brought their pilots to practice at our hometown field, and what a sight those Gulf Air Tristars were with the Golden Falcons on the tricolor tails made! Around that time there was a massive drought in the northern plains and farmers all over Kansas came to FOE to donate bales of hay for the cattle of the stricken farms in the Dakotas. USAF C-141Bs and C-5As would file in every two hours during the daylight hours to pick up the haybales and fly them to the Dakotas. I don't care how old they are, the Starlifter and Galaxy are still impressive aircraft. Okay time for the next airport. Maybe I won't be so free with the hints this time! ![]() How long can we keep this thread alive anyway?

Chicken -
When I get stuck I call Miss Cleo. You should see my phone bill to her on the last airport. I am still thinking about the latest. Thanks for the challenge.

Lee, Orlando Sanford is incorrect. Here's a hint, the city this airport serves sits on a major US river.

PT, Allegheny County Airport (AGC) is INCORRECT! Here's another clue- there's no Class B airspace near this airport!

Here goes another bad guess:
LaCrosse WI? My wife seems to think this is in Indiana, but I think the river hint would preclude that.

And we have us a winner! DING DING DING! EVV is correct, that was an image of Evansville Regional Airport. Lee, your wife was correct in placing the airport in Indiana!
Okay, next mysteryport will be on a new thread. Time to retire this one and start a new one!

If you look at the bottom left corner of the picture there is a Whirlpool plant, I believe. During WW2 they built P-47's there. I got my first type rating at that airport.
