Unhappy Implications for the A380 !?

What do you think will happen to the A380 program as a result of the terrorist attacks? In light of Boeing laying off 30000 employees, and the major american carriers following suit with their own layoffs and schedule cutbacks, it seems that this is probably the worst time possible to be trying to get this thing off the ground.

Not only that, but this great, big, fat plane, carrying 550+ passengers, would seem to be a very tempting target for hijacking. I'm not an Airbus basher/hater, but one has to wonder how the recent events will affect this program.

Well KJC,

May be Airbus is quite happy that no U.S. carrier is among the A380's launch customers...

Unhappy

Well, guys, I heard rumours from EADS subcontractors that they might put the project on hold.

Besides, EADS shares have dropped at least 11% in the last two weeks.

I'd guess that A380 and Sonic Cruiser development will slip a few years. They both still have great future outlooks, but the short-tern prospects are slim.

While it is true that no A-380 customers are US airlines, it is also true that many of the routes the A380 was going to flown on are to the US. Also while Boeing may be hit hard by the future predictions, Airbus too might take a similar beating in orders since many of the customers for their narrow bodied planes are US Airlines such as Northwest, United, US Airways, America West, Jet Blue, etc.

Today, Lufthansa announced that they are delaying their decision for an A380 order (they intend to sign for 15 firm orders). However, today, Airbus Industries announced that they are freezing the production rate of aircraft at the current state, but are continuing full development of the A380. They said, disregarding the crisis which results from the attacks in the U.S., that Airbus will have the right aircraft at the right time. Actually, that's what they hope.

I think the attack will affect all airlines of all coutries. Airbus will probably want to wait a little while to see what all the long term effects are.
