NWA188: Overflies MSP
DL60: Lands on taxiway at ATL QF458: Comes within 700ft of landing with gear up. Gentlemen, that completes the trifecta. ![]() QANTAS has stood down two pilots after a Boeing 767 landing in Sydney came within 700ft of the ground before the flight crew realised they had not lowered the plane's undercarriage. The airline and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched investigations into the October 26 incident. The pilots are due to be interviewed by authorities on Friday. The crew on the Melbourne-Sydney CityFlyer service apparently recognised the problem and had started go-around procedures when they received a "gear too low" aural warning from the aircraft's enhanced ground proximity warning system. Qantas pilots forgot to lower wheels | Travel News | News.com.au

Here is a story of another plane making a belly landing. A PIA 747-200 from Karachi to Islamabad made this landing with 264 crew and passengers on board.
History of PIA - Pakistan International Airlines ![]() Incidentally on that flight were British Airways crew (locally hired Pakistanis) that were flying to Islamabad to work on the Islamabad-London flight. These very crew members were the ones to open the emergency chutes, and not the PIA crew on the flight. (I know this because one of the BA flight attendant lived close to where I lived. She was later given an award by BA at the Headquarters in London. I'll try and find more on that if I can) |

Not that Tupe ... just that they caught the problem in time and were able to rely on instrumentation to warn them of the matter and to execute a "go around".
Naturally, it's the pilot's fault for not lowering the gears in the first place, but 700 feet off the ground is a lot more than 70 feet, so I don't feel it was such a close call either ... just my two cents worth.

I wonder how they missed that. The PnF must have been doing the checklist from memory, or the crew completely skipped the normal before landing checklist.

Even if the PM was doing the checklist from memory, how do you completely forget the gear? Reminds me of the Continental DC-9-30 going into IAH when the pilots were so busy talking about golf and crap that they never ran the Before Landing checklist, forgot to turn on some hydraulic pumps or something, and the gear and flaps never extended. One of the pilots even noticed that they were coming in way too hot, but they still put the thing down on its belly.

The pilot have been suspended. BUSTED! When your going to land you can't rely on your memory.
