I'm relieved to know that the flight landed safely, but can only imagine the momentary fear the passengers were experiencing.

I'm sure the passengers were relived to know that Jetstar sent another A330 to GUM to take them to their destination.

How does a cockpit window catch fire???

The passengers must have been very relieved to see that another A330 was sent!

Not a good couple of weeks for Airbus and its A330s. Of course, many more have flown without any problems.

These type of things happen on other types of aircraft as well. However this kind of report is obviously lapped up by the easily excited. As Tupolev has stated it is unlikley the "concerned" passengers were aware of the nature of the event at the time, and would have been more "concerned" about continuing on to their destination. A week and half ago wasn't the first fatal crash of an A330, it was the first fatal crash involving passengers of an A330. Whether your "relief" assuages their "momentary fear" one can only guess at.

It is laced with an electrical heating element for strength and clarity. Wherever you find electrical wires and or insulation you have the potential for a fire. You have wires all over your house and car, but how often do they catch fire. Very rarely, but it does happen.

An extremely rare and tragic accident, that unfortunetaly will take much longer than a series of CNN soundbites to actually solve. In fact there will be very few airliners that complete any given week without some defect or other being written up in their technical logs. The A330 is no exception. In fact a 767 diverted into Halifax with something similiar to the Jetstar A330, hardly a disasterous week for Boeing. From time to time these things happen, they do not correlate to the one isolated tragedy.

VC10 ... pardon my ignorance as I'm not consistently on these message boards, and in particular, I'm not too familiar with many of the members here save a few "notorious" ones ...

But from your other post, you mention that you're an airline pilot? That's great ... I was hoping to be one growing up but I had a fear of flying. Just kidding ... joke there. Except the part about wanting to be an airline pilot.

In fact - when I was in my teens, I had the opportunity to try my hand at the Pan American pilot training facility they had at SFO. I actually had the privilege to fly the 747-100 simulator in FULL motion!!! That was THE THRILL of my younger days ... I crashed the plane upon landing, but otherwise I was able to maneuver it fairly steadily. If I had the benefit of Microsoft Flight Simulator I would have landed that puppy no sweat on runway 28L @ SFO.

What airline do you fly for? I gather you're from England? If so, we are comrades, as I was born in London - Hammersmith to be exact.

Enough about me ... just thought I'd "clear the air".

Cheers!
