Default Airlines and NASCAR

Why don't the airlines become primary sponors for teams in NASCAR like how they used to be? That would be pure market gain, IMO. The only sponsorship I know of in today's NASCAR are the numerous billboards around Atlanta Motor Speedway that say DELTA on them. Even the military sponsors cars, so it can't be that hard to do it.

Here is Richard Childress Racing's Piedmont car from the 80's:

Um, maybe because they're just struggling to stay in the air?? Probably the same reason you don't see them do a whole lot of TV commercials, providing free inflight meals, or zero checked bag fees...better things to spend their money on, you know, like CEO Bonuses...

Justino,

If ever there was an airline to sponsor a NASCAR team, it was Winston-Salem based Piedmont Airlines.

NASCAR and Piedmont go back to the 1950s when Bill France and many team owners purchased private planes from Piedmont's General Aviation Division. The public became familiar with this connection when in 1982, Piedmont began sponsoring a NASCAR team.

NASCAR, Piedmont and former Winston Cup Sponsor, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company are North Carolina institutions. There partnership grew closer as R.J.R.s cigerette commercials were banned from television and Piedmont's route system coincided with much of NASCAR'S home territory.

This natural progression takes place in sports, science, entertainment, politics, etc.; that is, having precisely the right instrument at precisely the right moment of history and exactly the right place. A moment like this won't come for millennia.
