Default Boeing factory tours

Hello, all

Anyone know about what time/what place boeing allows factory tours?

I know that photography is not allowed, but am heading up to seattle soon and would REALLY like to know how they work!

Thanks

Ian

Just got back from a visit. If you want to take pics, there is a lovely grassy knoll with a spectacular view of the flight line and factory. You can sit there all day I guess. If possible go during the week as I'm sure it is crowded during the weekend.

The future of flight is neat but very small and mostly made to keep you busy while waiting.

The Boeing Shop (where you will be conveniently dropped off at after the visit) is pretty good and IIRC you get a discount on one item with your admission ticket. They give you a small booklet after the tour.

The tour goes like this:

You are screened for electronic items (they do provide lockers for your stuff) then you watch a short film.

You exit out the of the theater into a bus where you are taken to the factory. You walk along the service tunnels and then take freight elevators to the observation platforms. I got to see the 747/777 and 787 lines.

The explanation and content of the tour are- well - geared for the aviation novice (like my Mom) but don't hesitate to ask questions. The guides are helpful and friendly.

If you are in SEA - you MUST go to the Museum of Flight - and be prepared to stay 4-6 hours - fantastic museum.

It's too bad you didn't enjoy it - but think about it - where ELSE, other than AIRBUS in France, can you see airliners being built?

You gotta appreciate the fact that, in this day and age, you even GET the opportunity to do so. Scrutiny and security HAS to be tight, because this is a VERY competitive industry, and therefore, Boeing must maintain their integrity, at least when it comes to public tours.

Remember, this is a CORPORATION, and not a government-sanctioned facility - unlike the Smithsonian-type museums in Washington D.C. and so forth. It may not be the best for aviation "enthusiasts" like ourselves, but for John Q. Public, it could be a great opportunity.

Wonder if they let you take your camera into the observation deck... I guess no, but thanks for the tip about the grassy knoll, I hope that I can take some pictures from there... It depends on how long my friends can stand to indulge me with the tour.

Great!!!
I will be planning a tour and going to the Museum of Flight as well. Somehow all I need is some time off and a way to get there. Can stay at a Holiday Inn while I am there.

I took the Boeing Tour in June of 2007. We got to see both the 777 and 787 assembly lines (observation deck is between both lines). My guess is they rotate the observation decks depending on what's going on in the hangers.

The reason we were told for no cameras or cell phones, is that some idiot dropped his camera from an observation deck on to the wing of a new 777. The repairs cost Boeing (or the camera owner) tens of thousands of dollars.

All that because someone didn't put the strap round their neck

I've been guilty of that quite a lot before, but I wouldn't drop the camera!!

Thats pretty stupid, to drop your camera onto the wing of the airplane.

I was sondering what the reason was, as I am sure that anything worth industrial spying on weould be done far away from the areas where the tour takes place.

Idiots need to learn how to properly secure their cameras.

I had one of these for a rental car last year. Awesome car to drive. Did yours have the cooling system in the seats?

Yeah, fun car. Was dent on gasoline too once on the highway (~24). The Northstar is great, really did the trick in the hilly roads near Mt. Rainier. It did have the cooled seats. When I got into it I accidentally put it on heat. Man, I thought I had an accident, but not involving the car

Then I turned the cooling mode on, MUCH better
