Default Adam Air B734 skids off runway, 5pax injured

Quote:
AN Indonesian passenger plane carrying 174 people skidded off the runway in heavy rain, injuring five people, while landing at Batam airport.

The Boeing 737-400 operated by local budget carrier Adam Air overshot the runway at Hang Nadim airport on Batam, an Indonesian island close to Singapore, and its right wing was damaged, said airline spokesman Danke Drajat.
"It rained heavily at the airport but whether it was due to the weather it is not for us to say,'' Mr Drajat said.
The national transport safety committee was investigating.

Not a good time for Indonesian aviation .. all those incidents including a major air-crash.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't Garuda banned from flying into the EU? Do they still fly to the US?

As of March 2008, Garuda, along with all Indonesian airlines, is banned from flying to Europe.
However if Garuda are revitalising the routes to Europe, only the A330's or B772's can be used.

An updated blacklist of unsafe airlines also includes operators from Bulgaria, Moldova, Angola and Ukraine.
Indonesian carriers do not currently fly to Europe, but the ban serves as a warning to consumers not to use these airlines elsewhere in the world.
"European citizens should avoid flying with these carriers," an EU official said. "They are really unsafe."

Default Off topic. Don't judge an aircraft by it's exterior.

I hope the Philippine Airlines will never get onto the EU Ban list as PAL are listed by FAA on the US sector. But again IMHO Philippine Airlines ARE a safe airline to fly with. Their last incident was also an A320 "overrun" but Airbus and PAL investigators claimed it was a Pilot Error, not technical related. :-)

They have 772s.. Or are these the ones presumably on order, which I last recall were 773ERs.

PIA was on this list too...but I believe the ban for them has been lifted.

Yes, the EU is pretty strict about safety. About half of them on the list are from Africa, where there isn't much maintenance standards or the aircraft are very old. I suspect security is a major factor too.
