Default Air India likely to join Star Alliance

"Star Alliance, a global airline alliance network, has confirmed that national carrier Air India is likely to join it as a partner airline..."

Deccan Herald - Air India likely to join Star Alliance

The article also mentioned that: "There is a membership fee to join the alliance."

I wonder how much the membership fee is.

Interesting...Cause this "fee" I suppose TAM never became a member of any alliance. Now I can understand that.

Thanks for the info.

Not quite sure the exact fee amount but it'd be interesting to know that and wether this is an annual fee or a one-time fee.

BTW, did TAM ever express their interest in joining an alliance? If so, was it Star Alliance, SkyTeam or OneWorld?

They always refused to join an alliance. I thought they didn´t join an alliance because they have agreements with Air France (Skyteam), AA (Oneworld), TAP (Star ) and now with LH and TACA (Star). I suppose it is better for them to have this code-shares than joining an alliance and gaving up some important code-shares.

A total of 2 Billion USD in fees are spent annually by the carriers that make up Star Alliance. These fees are paid to global distribution systems (GDS) such as Amadeus, Abacus and Sabre for developing and maintaining global access to information shared between the carriers of the alliance. Informational services such as reservations, eticketing, scheduling, passenger programs, etc. are a few examples of what the alliance depends upon to ensure that a seamless connection is maintained.

Because of the exorbitant costs and controversal "content sharing" associated with GDS firms, Star Alliance has created Alternative Content Access Platform (ACAP). This new informational system is being created by three vendors (G2 Switchworks, ITA Software and Lufthansa Systems) to drastically cut costs associated with information distribution.

I think Air India and Star Alliance will benefit together with the alliance's developing system. And I also think that these GDS firms may become a thing of the past.

There is no doubt that code-sharing is more prevalent amongst non-allianced airlines than those which belong to alliances. I guess every every airline will have to evaluate the pros and cons in joining an alliance. And you are right, I have read somewhere that if an airline were to join an alliance, it may have to give up some of its code-shares with certain airlines.

Thanks for the info, Steve! I'll have to find more on those GDS you mentioned above.
