Default Republic Convair 580

Republic Convair 580s photographed at ORD in the early 1980s. This is a scanned photo taken with an "Instamatic" Kodak camera, but these birds are preserved for posterity.

Loved those NC 580s - when going to college in MKE I'd purposely fly EWR-ORD or
JFK-ORD and connect to NC up to MKE. The 580 had those big windows and comfy
seats, with power to throw away. Made you feel absolutely safe even in the poor
winter conditions often seen around the Chicago region.

I never got to fly on the Republic 580's just the Northwest 580's after Republic had been swallowed up . What I find interesting is that these planes had the Republic name but are still wearing the North Central colors. My guess this might be even earlier than 1980, might even be 1978, 1979. Because the name Republic came into existance with the merger of North Central and Southern in 1978.

Thanks for the photo.

I used to hang out at Mitchell when I was a kid, then during my years at
Marquette. Sorely wish I could have flown on the NW Electras, but I fig-
ured the 580s were "half an Electra" as someone put it. This will date me
somewhat, but I even remember the WISANG flying the F-89 Scorpions,
the C-119s and the KC-97s out of Mitchell. You also never forget the
scream of a Capital (later UA) Viscount. That observation deck was a
great place to hang out.

Have a brat for me - takes some searching to find 'em in NJ...

Yea you have a few years on me. There is still and F-89, C-119, and a F-4 sitting on the south end of Mitchell, Near the ANG center. I drive by them almost every day. The observation area is on the north end of the field, near one nine left. You can listen to the tower on radio station 88.5. Though with the presidential election it is now closed pretty often. Urg! I see DC-9s, 717s, 757, 737, Doiners, and Bea 145s.

As for the brats, I have them about once a month.
