I just got back from Bangkok this evening. At Bangkok airport was an EL AL 747-200 reg 4X-AXQ in the old colours parked one of the gates. I didn't think they have any planes left with the old colour scheme. Explanation anyone?
Anyway it was really nice to see it. Also great spotting was An IL 96 in the new Aeroflot colours... Abso-f***ing-lutely beautiful, and an Ethiopian 767 in the nc's also a beat!! never seen one in the new colours till now. |

As nobody else helps you out, here goes my guess:
The coat (painting) on an aircraft has to be renewed after a so called "D-check" (paint has to be stripped of to do all the necessary work). As an aircraft is flown several years between two D-checks (roughly 6 years, also pending on flying hours), you can still see old colors on some aircraft if the owner does not want to spend the extra money to repaint it early. That might be the case on the EL AL 47 you mentioned. |

Just did a brief search on EL AL latest colors and it seems like they introduced it arround 1998/99.
That would mean that EL AL's old colors only will stay for some futher months. ![]() |
