Default Air New Zealand Suicide... Unreal

the entire crew of a scheduled ANZ flight today from LAX was enroute to the airport when an apparent suicide jumper fell to his death and landed on their shuttle van. The body then rolled off the roof and onto the road in front of them. The crew was so
traumatized that ANZ cancelled the flight and flew them all home on the empty 747400 to releive their stress. All other passengers were directed to other flights. It cost the airline about $50,000 for this gesture....

Only $50k to fly a 744 from LAX to New Zealand? (I assume the crew is based in New Zealand.) Are you sure they weren't just repositioning the aircraft, and invited the crew to come along? (I'm not sure how often widebodies fly w/o passangers, but it would not suprise me to learn that it happens with semi-regular frequency.)

Yikes that's terrible. I too would certainly be traumatized for a bit by something so horrific.

Highway and railway suicides are a pretty common event really, I'm happy to see ANZ being so humane to it's staff but surely any good company would do the same? The work I'm in see's a few deaths and mutilations and it's standard procedure to repatriate the people involved as witnesses on compassionate grounds,

Your rarely see a jumbo repositioned empty over this distance (6500+ miles).

Does anybody know how badly damaged the shuttle van was?

Poor shuttle bus... Was the dealer notified? What about the other vehicles in the area? Were they traumatized? Did the coroner's office have a big enough spatula? These are questions that deserve answers...

Thumbs up They didn't mention the distance of the bounce.

Refreshing article, it's good to know that ANZ doesn't force their pilots to consort with the hired help in the back.

Too bad about the people stuck in the traffic jamb and the delayed passengers on account of this fellas mischief.

I heard the jumper got a combined score for form and landing of 8.5. Damn East German judge...

Default The jumper was a former TSA Screener recently fired from Radio Shack

I small print article I found in the LA Times stated that; the jumpers head was nearly torn off when a passing car struck him at highway speed, the car (a Volkswagen) sustained a blown tire and damage severe enough that it had to be towed away.
I wonder if the East German judge was perhaps driving this vehicle, and if he had road hazard to cover a skull splinter/sidewall incident?
Well nonetheless, he sure was a poor sport over this whole thing.

That reminds me....

During training, Homicide came in and did a slide show for us. By far, the funniest pic was taken at a suicide scene. This guy ate the barrel of his 20-gauge, scattering parts of his noggin across the room. The CSU took a pic of some debris that stuck to the ceiling and looked odd. It was the area around his eye with the eyeball still in it!!!! Wish I had a copy of that to post here...
