FAA to order move to cut explosive risk.
The FAA will oder airlines to install systems that will reduce the flammable vapors in the fuel tanks of 3800 American jetliners. It will take two more years to finalize the directive and seven more years to complete the retrofit. Nows thats a total of 15 yrs from the downing of TWA800 to the final retrofit complete. Nice to know the FAA can react swiftly when they really push themselves. I think grounding all SAMs would have been a more appropriate response.

Good call!
Just watched the NOVA special on the crash of Swissair flt. 111 (MD-11 that crashed off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia). At the end it showed how FAA certified insulation failed an FAA test...that burning insulation helped lead to the crash. They gave the airlines 5 years to replace it...in the meantime, try not to let it catch fire. Good luck! PS - great PBS special...they were very accurate in video and how they talked about the incident. It was the perfect blend of "joe six pack" slang and technospeak. NOVA had great access through the whole investigation. |

They could take as long as they want to implement the insulation directive on MD-11's or the fuel vapor reduction in-tank device mandate.
I still climb aboard any aircraft (MD-11's included, until DAL retired theirs) without hesitation. |
