That is the most long-winded description of four new routes I have ever seen.
Good for them. The big-boys need a wake-up call. |

AW will be using A319s, and the flights will only be twice daily. I don't know if it will make much of a dent in the transcon business of American, United and Delta. In the JFK-LAX market, AA has 9 daily 767-200s, UA 7 daily 767-200s, and DL 4 or 5 daily 767-300ERs, depending on the season.
JFK-LAX is the single most profitable route in AA's network, so it will be interesting to see how they defend their market share. One thing that has adversely affected the JFK-LAX route is the fact that the Hollywood crowd who have supported the routes since the 1950s have been abandoning commercial flights because the additional security is a hassle for them, so they are flying more and more on private jets. They can go to a smaller airport, get to their Gulfstream IV in minutes and be on their way. They don't even have to deal with traffic and waiting to take off. Even if they're not quite wealthy enough to own and maintain their own plane, they can timeshare, and it's more "affordable." |

"Starfish" is the in-house code for a low-cost United branded airline set for introduction in the 1st quarter of 2004. Thus far 40 existing aircraft will be allocated for the service which will focus on leisure destinations. Pilots, flight attendants, and all maintenance action will be provided by current employees earning the same wages. A few of the projected cities are: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Minneapolis, San Juan, Anchorage (!), San Diego, San Francisco, and approx 10 others initially.

Hey Scott, any word on the rumors of United World Wide Cargo coming back? I heard they would come back with dedicated freighters (i.e- 747-400F's).

Good question Travis and Richie.... despite the booming cargo market there are no plans that I know of to restart the worldwide cargo network. There was talk of converting some of the desert-dwelling 747-400's into freighters, but most will be placed into passenger service. During bankruptcy 2 things occurred to raise their value to UA: First, the pilot wages were reduced to 777 pay scales, and then further cut by 30%. Secondly, the lessors for the non UA owned birds were severely hammered to reflect the poor market for the biggest Boeings - something they couldn't achieve with the marketable 777's. Consequently, it's now the cheapest seat-mile aircraft in the UA fleet. Expect them to be flown till they drop!
