JetBlue Airways Orders 100 EMBRAER 190 Jet Aircraft, with Options for an Additional 100

JetBlue is Launch Customer for the New Aircraft


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 2003--JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ: JBLU - News) announced today that it has placed an order for 100 new EMBRAER 190 jet aircraft, with options for an additional 100 new aircraft.
Embraer values the firm contract at $3 billion, with a potential value of $6 billion if all options are exercised.

The announcement makes JetBlue the launch customer of the all-new 100-seat EMBRAER 190 aircraft. The EMBRAER 190 is the manufacturer's newest model in a family of mid-sized aircraft targeting the growing 70- to 110-seat market. This family incorporates advanced design features such as integrated avionics, fly-by-wire flight controls, and more efficient, environmentally friendly GE engines.

As with JetBlue's A320 fleet, all of the low-cost carrier's new Embraer aircraft will offer DIRECTV satellite programming at every roomy leather seat. The new aircraft will feature 100 seats in an all-coach, two-by-two seating configuration.

JetBlue plans to take delivery of the first seven Embraer aircraft in 2005, with the remainder of the order expected to be delivered through 2011 at a rate of approximately 18 per year. Options begin in 2011. With this new Embraer order and the low-cost airline's current fleet of 42 Airbus A320 aircraft plus orders and options for future Airbus deliveries, JetBlue's fleet could grow to as many as 290 aircraft by the end of 2011. Lease financing has been arranged for the first 30 EMBRAER 190 aircraft deliveries.

The EMBRAER 190 is powered by GE Aircraft Engines' CF34-10, the newest and most powerful member of GE's successful CF34 engine family. New technology features in the CF34-10 make it one of the most efficient, environmentally friendly engines in the world.

Interesting growth strategy for a low-cost. I think Air Tran has some type of commuter system in place. A 100-seater will allow JetBlue to go in a lot of smaller markets. It's cool they'll even have DirecTV on the ERJ 190s.

Isn't Air Wisconsin operating CRJ200s in AirTran Connect colours in and out of ATL for AirTran? I have seen photos of said CRJs and they are quite nice.

As I said, I believe it is Air Wisconsin, but I am not sure. Can anyone confirm please?

I'm afraid they just screwed the pooch.....

In this economy of turmoil, to order 100 planes seems quite foolish. The history books are littered with the carcasses (carcii?) of airlines that tried to grow too large too fast.

And by crossing away from Airbus and introducing a new type, they've just taken on the added expenses and complexity of a mixed fleet.

They should have gone with the A318, and added them slowly.

But I'm sure Southwest is applauding the move....

... Well Starliner, it seems that you are the pessimistic type. There are two ways to look at this from an aviation enthusiast perspective:

Expense: the airplane will cost ONE CENT per seat/mile more to operate than the A320 (the A318 would've been higher AND has too many seats to hit the target middle market).

Complexity/Southwest: Applauding... I doubt. Southwest DOES NOT fly one aircraft type... they fly 4 types of one derivative of aircraft the 737-200/300/500/700 which seat between 122-137 passengers, so to expect B6 to stick to the A320 would be asking the airline to completely ignore a lucrative market.

A318: Please give me ONE reason why the A318 should have be chosen.

History: This is not the past. JB has shown that once, twice and continues to each quarter, with profit, growth and an LOYAL customer base.

BUT I guess we will just have to see what happens. I know I've read the US Air is "studying" the effect of JBU's decision to purchase the 190... translation: they are running scared because we are attacking their new model for survival

Post Interesting news...

Well this certainly is not the kind of thing you expect to read everyday in the airline business. Good news in an otherwise dull and dismal industry.

I can just imagine the employees at JetBlue must be overjoyed with the announcement of this news.

This seems like a logical expansion of the theme that has been success for the airline. There will certainly be a lot of cities that will be looking forward to welcoming JetBlue to town.
