Default What happen if....

For those of you who had watched the movie "Airport", the TGA 707 landed safely after a bomb explosion... given the same bomb... if the plane is in a trijet, let's say a L1011... and the bomb exploded in the right aft lav... will the plane still be able to fly? OR will it cause damage to the rear engine?

Because I know the area around the rear engine will be fuel pipes.... so if there is an explosion in the aft toilet... will that cause another series of explosion or fire in the rear of the plane that lead to a catastrophic event?

Thanks~

It's hard to say, Louis, but would depend upon the severity of explosion. Manufacturers and airlines are aware of the possibility of bombs being smuggled into the cabin, and train flight crews for the discovery of an explosive device. Under certain circumstances the item can be moved to an area known as the LBL, or "least-risk-bomb-location". This area varies between aircraft. I'm being deliberately vague concerning details, but your concern has not escaped the industry.

Is it safe to assume that this area is in the No-Class (ahem....First Class) section?

In most aircraft the LBL is not in the first class section! There is only one aircraft in the past/present of UA's fleet that had/has the LBL in the "comfort zone".

Never mind Dave, I now realize that you were only joking.

Unfortunately for my get-Inez-rich-quick scheme, Mr. Boeing decided to build his 707 with a much stronger constitution that I anticipated. I couldn't wait the next few years for the new tri-motors to come into service. I'm sure I could have accomplished my task with one of those. And lord knows, I'm sure by the time the new jumbos entered service Captain Demerest had been canned for drinking and sexual harassment. That would have saved me some headache.
