Default Night photography help

I have a few questions for those of you who are experienced night photographers.

I want to be able to take quality photographs at night. Could anyone explain to me how to get the good quality night pictures I see on airliners.net as well as the light trails that make them look so cool? I have done some reading on it and I have a pretty good idea on how it's done but I'd like to hear it from you guys related to airplane spotting, along with some of the difficulties of shooting at night. Thanks!
