Default Best Passenger Aircraft

What are people's opinion on which airliner offers the best comfort to the passenger, first class aside?

I've always thought that the B-767 is the best in this department because of the 2-3-2 seating arrangement. There is only a 1 in 7 chance of getting the much hated middle seat.

My question intended to have all airliners considered. In other words, I'd rather fly on a B-767 than a narrow-body aircraft given the seat layout; 2-3-2 is better than 3-3, 3-4-3 etc. I know that there are other factors such as the distance between the seats which affects leg-room. I assume that this is influenced more by the airline and not by aircraft design.

It's the airline, not the plane.

Most comfortable plane I've ever been on: DL 763.

Most god-awful plane I've ever been on: UA 763.

I think it really depends on the airline and the way they arrange their seating plan.

The best flight I had was on a KLM B747-200SUD. I flew in economy class. I got the seat right by the exist, so I had unlimited leg room! On my return flight I got the 2nd last seat on the aircraft; leg room was also good. Overall, great comfy flights with excellent service.

Well, here is my 2 cents.....

Call me old fashioned (but not old...I am only 32), but I really like the DC9/MD80/717 for comfort.

As mentioned above, you have a 1 in 5 chance for a middle seat. Engines in the back are nice for noise in the cabin. Plus having 2/3 seating means that there is one less person per row trying to yank their bags out of the overhead compartment when deplaning.

With AA being my primary carrier (not for long if they lose "More room in coach), I am on the 80's a lot. I miss the TWA 717's a lot though. Nothing like a clean new interior to make you feel special.

757's are also a favorite of mine. When not getting upgraded to the front of the class, there is ample exit and bulkhead seating for my outstretched legs. Also, all seem to have video screens so I can watch another episode of "Everyone Loves Raymond".

Going wide....I have to give cudos to the 767 and 777. I like getting on the 2-seat sides of these brutes. They fly smooth as glass! But overall, I love the DC10! It is fun to ride in a sleek sporty model....but the feeling of riding in a tank is that much more exciting.

I have had a few opportunities to fly on A330's, and they just don't match the smooth ride of the Boeing wides.

Regretably, I have never flown on a 747. I hope some are still around for me to try out in the near future.

The 757 is know as the "cattle car" of the industry... MOST airlines tend to pack them with economy seats and the 3-3 config doesn't help.

The MD80 nice, but no IFE (In-Flight entertainment). The 717 is a nicer substitute.

My vote is the CX A330 (HKG-SFO), the SQ 747-400 (JFK-FRA) and an AA 767-300.

As an airliner, I would agree the 767 is sleek, comfortable and the range is excellent for the build! Very multi-purpose.

I just rode in the first row of coach on a Northwest DC-9-30 and the legroom was unbelieveable! There is no bulkhead there only a curtain that hung about half way to the floor and I could see the back of the first class seat in front of me but barely touch it with my feet. I would ask for row 5 any chance you can, nice and quiet being well away from the engines and in front of the wing.

Believe it or not, I have yet to fly in a 767. But the 757 is not too bad. 777's are probably my favorite, screens in each seat, and plenty of legroom. And on a recent Delta flight, I found the 737 has decent legroom. Just a word of advice-don't sit in front of a exit row, the seats don't recline.

From a passenger standpoint, I think a 767 is a little better than the 777 or A340/330, because of the 2-3-2 seating. But the configuration is important, too. AA has a 2-5-2 coach configuration on its 777s, while DL, CO, BA, AF & SQ have a 3-3-3 seating arrangement. The middle seat of the 5 in the middle is awful. Imagine that from Tokyo to New York. Nasty!

Default MD-90

I find them all to be so similar as far as seat comfort goes (in coach) that it depends more upon which seat on the aircraft I get more so than which aircraft.
The MD-90 is excellent up towards the front as it is silent.
The 767-300ER is great all the way around but the non-ER version(s) are so so.
Give me a 737NG over a 757 any day, but a 757 over a 737-300/400/500/600

And I will take an old boy (737-200, 727, DC-9, DC-10, L-1011 etc) any day over any of the new stuff.

Then there’s always the 747, an absolute thrill to be aboard just because of its sheer size but generally you are crammed in pretty tight and usually for several hours.

I am not an Airbus fan but normally I find them roomy and comfortable but strange sounding.

My favorite airliner (so far) is the United 777. A ton of legroom, very graceful exterior apearance to the 777, and the takeoff roll is outstanding!

I've yet to fly on the 767, but next month I'll be flying a DL767, and from some of the previous statements I guess I'll be enjoying it too!

Question for David Hingtgen or for anyone else that has flown a DL 767- what were some of the differences between the UA 767 and the DL 767 that you liked and disliked?

Pitch! UA 763 had the least pitch of anything I've ever been in, except perhaps a SF-340. Like 29 inches or something. It was an almost brand-new 763, in their new deep-blue interior--which also means less pitch and narrower seats! Older UA planes are much better.

All my DL flights were good, but the 763 and 762 were tops. Decent spacing, and I swear slightly wider seats than most.

I'm trying for a F-100, 738, CRJ-700, and RR-powered 752 this summer (guess who I'm flying) and will see how they are. (Been a long time since my last 757)

PS--notably good is the last couple rows of a DC-10--lots of room, as the tapering rear fuselage forces them to remove a few seats, thus making lots of room for the last 3 rows or so.

Only plane I've ever slept on: AA A300. Whether it was due to weariness or being on a big comfy Airbus, I'll never know.

I flew this ol’ beast on 2 occasions from Narita to New Delhi and for some reason these flights were absolute dreams. Having flown on Singapore, Eva, JAL, & many others, I can honestly say that business class on a 743 operated by Air India was not only the biggest surprise, but one of the truly great experiences of my travels; the flight from Goa to New Delhi, however, was a whole different story, let me tell ya!!
