Default Speedbird 9 : 1982

Did anybody see the special on NBC last night on the BA747 that flew through volcanic ash back in 1982? Talking about freaky!!!! I don't recall the incident, but I'm glad they aired it.

that was a great show .. I was wondering why the engines were throwing out fireballs when they were off though ... would have been nice to see the science behind some of the things that happened.

It was very interesting. Such a mystery till the end! I don't remember reading about it when it happened either.

Thumbs up

I watched it and have to commend NBC for doing a good job of telling this amazing story; even their graphics were pretty good (at least they weren't trying to pass a 737 off as a Jumbo, as we so often see in made for TV stuff). I read the book several years ago, and if I recall, the fireballs were caused by burning fuel as the ignitors tried to recatch the engines. I wonder just who has that machine today?

I don't recall what the host said exactly, but it is still flying today. I don't think she mentioned the airline.

Ya,it was pretty good. Very Interesting, If I was the pilot and saw that everythingwas working at 13,000ft, I wthink I would have kept it there for the duration of the flight.

Typical when non-airplane artists monkey around with stuff... you had to look quick but I didtinctly remember seeing -400 winglets and a distinctive -400 wingspan on that computer-generated 747! I thought Speedbird 9 was a -236?

The winglets were on about half the animation. The thing that got me is when they had the anttena off the end of the wing like a 742 and the winglet off a 744.

The flight was from Singapore to Perth (Australia),after the ash cloud encounter, it made an emergency landing at Jakarta. There was another SQ aircraft about 1 hr behind this BA,it too encountered the ash cloud but was not as severely affected ...it continued onto Perth.Back in those days, news of volcanic eruptions or operational hazards were not NOTAM`ed as quickly unlike todays standards.
