Post Concorde makes emergency landing

Halifax — An Air France Concorde jet carrying, among others, supermodels Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista made an emergency landing at Halifax International Airport on Wednesday after developing engine trouble.

The supersonic jet, flying from Paris to New York, landed safely about 9:20 a.m.

The supermodels and their entourage were taken to the terminal by buses and they had to clear through Canada Customs before waiting in a lounge for the Air Canada flight that took them on to New York about noon.

Several airport workers said they managed to sneak a look at Ms. Campbell and Ms. Evangelista. The attendants and baggage handlers were disappointed to find that the two women, whose faces have graced hundreds of magazine covers, were wearing sweatsuits and no make-up.

Workers, who asked not to be identified, said the two supermodels looked extremely thin and not as tall as they appear in photos. A spokeswoman for Air Canada said the airline was notified of the arrival of the Concorde about five minutes before it landed and took care of the passengers for three hours.

"Our crew did a great job of getting them on to their final destination," Isabelle Arthur, spokeswoman for Air Canada said.

The airline would not identify passengers on the flight.

Air France is bringing a crew of mechanics from New York to Halifax to look over the needle-nosed aircraft.

The last time a Concorde landed in Canada was in July, 2000, when mechanical problems forced a transatlantic flight to land in Gander, Nfld. Singer Tony Bennett was on that flight.

In July, 2000, an Air France Concorde caught fire and crashed near Paris, killing 113 people. The jets were grounded for nearly a year while the mishap was investigated. That crash is believed to have been caused by a metal strip on the runway which damaged a tire on the Concorde.

Arrow I think it is time to mothball the Concorde.

It must be beyond its years. It goes supersonic! Not like it is a DC-3.

i really wish Boeing and Lockheed went ahead w/ their plans for an SST; the Concorde either needs to be replaced or the production line needs to be opened soon.

I agree- the Concorde is an old relic now.

P.S.- I had Linda Evangelista as a passenger on a flight to Paris 11 years ago. She had really bad acne & she acts like a spoiled child. I was kind of happy she was inconvenienced!
