Unhappy Plane With 250 Aboard Crashes in Iran

Plane With 250 Aboard Crashes in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran - A plane carrying at least 250 people, most of them military personnel, crashed in southeastern Iran, Tehran television reported Wednesday.

The plane was flying from Zahedan, on the Pakistan border, to Kerman, about 500 miles southeast of Tehran.

The state-run television said the plane, a Russian-built Antonov, lost contact with the control tower at 5:30 p.m. and crashed near Shahdad, about 50 miles from Kerman. Television said no other details were immediately available.

The last reported commercial crash in Iran was Feb. 12 when a Russian-built Tupolev Tu-154 slammed into a snow-covered mountain near the city of Khorramabad, about 230 miles southwest of Tehran. All 119 on board the Iran Air Tours flight were killed.

Waitaminnit... isn't the Il-76 strictly a cargo aircraft?

The Iranians are blaming the US for the crash because they have not been able to upgrade their airline fleet since the trade imbargo took place in 1979. They claim it is difficult to maintain their fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft and they are just getting plain too old.

Wait a minute. Didn't the Iranians want to become a fundementalist Islam state and do away with anything related to Western Culture? So where exactly does a 747 come into the equation?

Geez, you would think Airbus would be all over the Iranians selling them their A320's and A340 POS planes. I mean the French will do anything for a quick buck.

Thumbs down NPR

If you listen to NPR for long enough, you will eventually learn that everything wrong with the world is the fault of the United States.

I may make myself unpopular here but I have a real soft spot for Iran, it seems to be probably the most ill judged country in the world. I know they were pretty dire through the 80's but in recent years there has been a big reform movement and they're one of the few countries in the mid East with a genuinely democratically elected President and assembly. The country is now in quite a tense situation with a reformist President (supported by the majority of Iranians) who wants to reform and modernise Iran, and to normalise relations with the West, and the old hard line religeous crackpots. I've been there a few times and it's a beautiful country, I would say this is the reason why I have a soft spot;
-In Iran even when the government goes off in rant mode I never met any ill feeling towards Westerners from Iranian people, they seperated their opinion of the West between government rhetoric and individuals, and people over there are very kind and hospitable.
-In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait I met complete dicks who hate the West and show it at every opportunity. I was there in the RAF in 90/91, and I tell you now most Saudi's hated our guts for being there, I think most people don't realise just what a potential bomb Saudi is, we talk of Iran but Saudi is a much more dangerous long term threat IMO, let's face it, where did most of the 9/11 hi-jackers and Osama bin liner come from? Iran has a bad past but is changing and wants to move forward to normalise their state, whereas places like Saudi are ticking time bombs waiting to explode.
Sorry for going into political rant mode This crash is a tragedy the same as any large scale loss of life

Why are you so against NPR? Would you really rather listen to the commercial news channels that pander to the bottom line only (maximize profits)?

Justin, you seemm to be perceptive with your observations about Persians, and some living in the US have said that they feel another revolution may be coming soon, what with all the kids protesting during the past year. I can't see how they manage to survive with the fundamentalist government - most of them love to party ! Sometimes for weeks at a time.

For instance, I was looking at some web sites devoted to Googoosh, who was a beautiful and expressive female pop vocalist during the shah era, back when Iranian women wore mini skirts. Because of the revolutionaries' ban on western-sounding pop music, her career went "down the tubes" and she stayed in her Teheran apartment, suffering bouts of depression. She did go on a tour of North American in 2001 (I think) visiting cities with large iranian populations (in particular, Teherangeles = Los Angeles ) So even in some otherways - while promising to break free from foreign influences - Iran's revolution has stifled the will of the people.
