AA currently has 34 A300-605Rs in its fleet. 27 are in a 2-class configuration & 7 are in a 3-class configuration which will be converted to a 2-class configuration this year, as they are no longer used for transatlantic service.

AA received its first A300 in 1988. They are used primarily in the Caribbean, Central America & near-South American markets where a high-capacity aircraft is needed for relatively shorter routes.

All of AA's A300s are leased. The first 25 delivered to AA are part of a deal AA made with Airbus whereby the planes are leased by the month, & AA can turn back those aircraft at any time.

AA plans to eventually operate an all-Boeing fleet, but the current economy & lack of a suitable replacement for the A300 in the markets in which it is used- a plane that can economically carry a lot of passengers & a large cargo hold over shorter distances- means the A300 will be in service for some time to come. A 767-300 or-400 in a 2-class high-density configuration may be a replacement in the future, but AA is not in the position of making any new financial commitments.

Hope this answers your question. If you ever have any more questions on the AA fleet, I can answer them.

Two of the 34 American A300-600 are parked in Roswell, NM. It looks like they are going to be there a while.

Strange- I wonder what they're doing there. We do know about AA grounding 28 former TWA LLC MD-80s & 14 B767-200s this year as the economy stumbles. AA Super80, do they look mothballed?

No they did not looked mothbothed. They do appear to be there for an exteneded stay along with several MD80/90 that American got in the Reno Air purchase. I was surprised by all the aircraft parked there. The two AA A300 were a shock.

I looked up the aircraft in AA's SABRE computer system & it shows 3 3-class A300s as being "unassigned at Roswell," plus 1 more "unassigned at TUL." I guess maybe they're just dealing with overcapacity, but you'd think the Caribbean, where the A300s are used, would be in high season.

The third one must be a new addition. When I was in Roswell last there were only two parked there.
