Flying L-1011's? Better pack a few novels and magazines - the Tristar was a marvelous aircraft, but today's dispatch reliability cannot be encouraging. Will other carriers accept their tickets while maintenance struggles to keep them flying?

I, too, hope this airline survives. I wonder how many of the 3-holer beasties they already have, and if this is more of a real operation than a paper tiger.

I had to laugh at how they are touting a 45,000 feet ceiling at 610 MPH, and comparing the old girl to the Concorde.

I'm a bit concerned the 10 abreast 32" pitch in Coach and 8 abreast in First may leave passengers wishing they had taken the city bus (transfer at Coronado for all stops West). Didn't 1011s normally have only have 9 across in the Coach?

From their website,
"Mainline Airways currently operates an exclusive fleet of state-of-the-art, USA built Lockheed Martin LM-1011-150 aircraft. The LM-1011's interior cabin area is an amazing 3000 square feet, is longer than 1/2 the length of an American Football field, and it is 20' wide! The LM-1011 comes as the only civilian passenger jet aircraft manufactured by performance military aircraft leader Lockheed Martin and is powered by three Rolls-Royce BMW turbofans. The first LM-1011-150 flew in 1989 for Air Transat Airlines of Canada (named the L-1011-150 until the 1995 merger between Lockheed Aircraft and Martin Marietta). In addition to having one of the best safety records in the sky, it has one of the lowest levels of cabin noise and vibration. The LM-1011 was the first civilian aircraft to feature all electric, "fly-by-wire" controls and was also the first commercial aircraft to complete a fully automated flight from takeoff to landing. Due to its strong construction, this aircraft has a usefully life approximately six (6) times longer than 747's and other similar aircraft; due to this strength combined with the LM-1011's power (provided by the Rolls-Royce BMW engines that produce 159,000 horsepower), it can fly faster and higher than any other commercial aircraft with the exception of the Concorde. (The LM-1011 flies 610 MPH and 45,000 FT high). Passengers can notice this difference in the flight level if the aircraft is flying at space altitudes and well above the weather (in the stratosphere) during the day by seeing the curvature of the earth separated from the darkness of the stratosphere (yes, the stratosphere is outer space!). Its high-attitude performance and strong pedigree was the reason that the LM-1011 is the first and only aircraft to be employed by the US Military to launch satellites into Orbit (at 45,000 FT), saving the expense of launching the satellites from the space shuttle. The LM-1011 flies just below the sound barrier (mach 1) at mach .94 (610 MPH), while most aircraft fly at approximately mach .78.

In addition to its performance, the LM-1011 is reliable. Dispatch reliability on these aircraft is 97.7%.

The LM-1011 has a significantly larger cabin than competitors' 767's. The 767 first flew in 1981.

All Mainline Airways aircraft have been re-fitted with a brand new interior featuring both leather seating and personal televisions in every seat in both first-class and coach."

-Makes it seem like the L1011 is the most modern aircraft ever produced!

Question

I seriously doubt the Tristar is capable of a cruise speed of .94 mach in revenue service. The fuel burn to fly significantly faster than an econ speed would be prodigious!

Maybe I am stupid here, but doesn't ETOPS mean its certified for Two engine operation. And if so, does this mean that the #2 engine is actually only storage space.

So say a 747 has a useful life span of about 30 years, what the age of an older 747-200 series would be right now, does that mean we can expect the LM-1011 to be in the skies for 180 years?? That would be quite an impressive feat!!

Even more so with the number two engine removed!

Believe it or not, From LAX-ATL back in 1996 we rode on L-1011 and I wrote message for pilots asking question about weight, speed, and other aviation talks. I was told that our L-1011 went 601 mph on that route.

I believe that there is three knowm jumbo jets that are capable to exceed 600 mph:

747's
L-1011's
DC-10/MD-11

By the way I am not sure whether 747SP once broke the speed record somewhere in 800-850 mph. It gotta to be United 747SP with special group by flying around the world. It said that 747SP shook while crusing that speed so the pilots had to reduce a few mph then stable for a few minutes. At last down to normal speed. Anyone correct me with this one please.

353 seats in a L-1011-150 makes it a cattle cart. If you want it cheap you get it real cheap. Glad it is only a 5-hour flight.

I was on a B777-200IGW with Rolls Royce engines that flew at 700 m.p.h. due to a tail wind, from LHR to JFK.
