Actually, AA is considered the co-launch customer of the DC-10 along with United. American was the first to order the DC-10 (25 firm plus 25 options), but the Douglas Board of Directors would not authorize the program until United placed an order (30 plus 30 options) a few weeks later.

Both AA and UA DC-10's were involved in the flight testing program, and both took their first deliveries on the same day during the same ceremony. (Coincidentally, both AA and UA took their initial DC-6 deliveries during the same ceremony many years before). At the conclusion of the delivery ceremony, the AA DC-10 took off first. AA inaugurated service on the ORD-LAX run a week or two before UA started SFO-IAD service.

Conclusion: AA was indeed first, but if UA had chosen the L-1011 instead (which they were close to doing), there would never have been a DC-10. It was United's order that actually launched the DC-10 program.
