Post Pentagon calls up Civil Reserve Air Fleet

Responding to the build-up of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf, the Department of Defense has activated the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, which allows the U.S. military to transport troops and equipment by commercial aircraft, a spokesman for the U.S. Transportation Command said Saturday.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld authorized the Stage One (Stage I may be activated by the USCINCTRANSCOM,1 to perform airlift services when the AMC airlift force cannot meet simultaneously both deployment and other traffic requirements. ) activation Saturday, according to a news release from the Defense Department. Stage One authorization is the lowest activation level, and occurs with "minor regional crises."

Though the activation means 22 U.S. airline companies and their 78 commercial aircraft may now be called upon to move large numbers of troops and cargo for the U.S. military, Navy Capt. Steve Honda said the commander of the Transportation Command, Air Force Gen. John Handy, is only activating 47 passenger aircraft.

Handy may still choose to activate the other 31 aircraft, which are all cargo planes, Honda said.

"This measure is necessary due to increased operations associated with the build-up of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf region," the news release said.

The airlines receive large peacetime contracts as incentives to participate in the CRAF program. The carriers operate and maintain their planes at their own expense, with the military controlling their missions.

When notified of a call-up, each carrier has 24-48 hours to have its aircraft ready for a mission.

The following carriers are members of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet:

tjwgrr,
Although the flight tracking info you posted is in the public domain, it may be prudent if you didn't detail how you have chosen to use it. There's no need to spoon-feed information to those who may have alterior motives. (nothing personal, man)

I've been flying many deadheading flight attendants the past few days to position them for "CRAF" flying. (civil reserve air fleet)
Without stating specific airports, missions, or a/c types, these individuals volunteer for such duty. The flying is held in such high esteem that the minimum seniority is generally 15 years or greater. It's a labor of love and patriotism; many of the FA's have similarly aged children and cherish the contact.

Deleted my post- didn't mean to cause a stir, just wanted to pass along something interesting to fellow enthusiasts.....

thanks. again, it was nothing personal, I'd just hate to see someone of dubious ethical fortitude getting hold of the info.

Interesting at United that the SENIOR F/As want to do the CRAF flying. At American it's the junior ones working the trips- the senior ones at AA feel it's different this time after 9-11. Plus I think you need to have smallpox & anthrax vaccines. There's a lot of apprehension about the anthrax vaccine.

Default CRAF flying

I'm a crew member on US Airways third CRAF trip. It will be next week. I get more details on Monday. I've already gone through the training which was VERY thorough and had the immunizations so I'm set.
