that would be the Air Borne Lazer (ABL), its a 744 that has a super powerful laser that would be used for theater protection against ballistic missiles.

Maybe, but this is one 747 I actually don't want to meet in a dark alley

This is the first of seven or eight depending on who you talk to of 747-400F freighters bought by the USAF to be part of a fleet of airborne laser platforms. I originally posted a bunch of stuff on this over on the Full-Scale forum of airlinebuzz.com.

Basics are that it is undergoing fligt testing at Edwards while the actual main lasers are undergoing testing in a fuselage in a building whose name escapes me at this moment. After initial testing of the laser, it will be mounted in this aircraft which is officially not a 747-400 but a YAL-1A. "Y" of course for experimental. This will have six COIL (Chemical Oxygen Iodine Lasers) lasers that will work in tandem to produce the total main power. In the actual production version designated "AL-1A" there will be 14 of these COIL lasers.

There is actually a second ranging laser mounted above the cockpit which has been tested inflight

or just www.airlinebuzz.com and navigate through the area.
