Six arrested after riot on jet
Friday, December 13, 2002 Posted: 1:28 PM EST (1828 GMT) CARDIFF, Wales -- Six passengers have been arrested after a serious fight onboard a plane carrying Celtic football fans from Spain to Scotland. The jet, which was heading from Santiago to Glasgow, made an emergency landing in Cardiff, Wales, after the crew sent out a mayday call following the disturbance. Two female flight attendants were allegedly assaulted although neither needed hospital treatment, a police spokesman said. Police surrounded the Boeing 737 as it landed at Cardiff airport with 148 passengers and crew on board. An RAF Sea King helicopter was alerted after the mayday call was made but stood down once the plane landed. A team of 30 police were interviewing passengers and crew from the plane, which was operated by Gatwick-based charter airline, Astraeus. Celtic, which last night played Spanish club Celta Vigo in the UEFA Cup, said they were "extremely concerned" about the incident. In a statement a spokesman for Astraeus said: "We can confirm that an Astraeus Boeing 737 en route from Santiago in northern Spain to Glasgow had to divert to Cardiff. "It landed safely at 1530 GMT following a disturbance on board involving a number of people. "We are currently investigating whether there were any injuries to crew or passengers, or any damage to the plane." South Wales Police Superintendent Colin Jones told the UK Press Association the cabin crew were "very, very traumatised" by the incident. "The vast majority of the passengers were behaving themselves, but it was the mindless minority that were responsible for this disorder," he said. The arrests were for criminal damage, public disorder and assault. He added: "More serious offences under the Aviation Act are likely to be considered. "All the passengers were Celtic supporters from Glasgow. They are all off the plane and are still with us here and aren't going anywhere for the foreseeable future." He said a lot of the passengers were traumatised. "The majority of people travel by air and most are apprehensive about it. "To have people acting in such a way when you are 30,000ft in the air is shocking and frightening." Celtic lost to Celta Vigo 2-1 on Thursday night but progressed to the fourth round of the UEFA Cup on away goals, having beaten the Spaniards 1-0 in Glasgow two weeks ago.
