I've been wondering whether, in the days before ETOPS, many of the major airlines flew 727s from the mainland to HNL. The -200 had a range of 2140nm at max payload (acc. to A.net), so I do not believe this would be enough, however the smaller -100 supposedly had the same fuel capacity as the -200, and would thus seem a likelier candidate.

Ferry flights or corporate 727's configured with extra fuel tanks were/ are the only 727’s making the jump as far as I know. I don't believe there were ever any scheduled mainland to Hawaii flights.
727's don't have quite enough range for the jump with required reserves and possible alternates in case of diversions. |

An operator could have installed extra fuel tanks in lieu of cargo volume, but a different limiting factor would have diminished the economics: The same maximum structural takeoff weight would have limited the passenger capacity. Perhaps only 60 or 70 seats could be filled.

The only 727's we saw here were Continental's serving Johnson Island and others in the Micronesia chain from here, an FAA 727, corporate 727's and an occasional 727 freighter.

Thanks for all your answers. Chris, were the CO 727s wearing meatball colors or NC? Did they say "Continental Micronesia"?

I have seen many 727s pass through HNL at any given time, all of the types Chris has mentioned and military types as well.
When I worked at the airport in the early 90s, I saw Continental fly the red meatball scheme (it read: Continental) on their 727s and later they switched to the new scheme which read Continental Micronesia on most.

In the 70's, Continental would lease a B-727-100c from Alaska Airlines to fly the Honolulu - Micronesia run when their aircraft was in for maintance. Continental only had one "C" version, so it was necessary to use the Alaska aircraft complete with the Eskimo paint scheme.

Man, all this 727 talk makes me miss them more and more.
I used to work on them for UAL, and infact was the first plane I marshalled in as a UAL rampie! (and damn right I got it on the line perfectly! Beginners luck... ).I'm happy that cargo companies still use them though. I see them fly in and out of YVR and YYC sometimes! |

Yes, it is sad that the airlines are getting rid of their 727s. Does anyone know when Delta will retire theirs? Maybe we will get a 737-800 at SYR, but I would rather have the 727 any day. |

Kitty Hawk and AIA used to fly 727s from HNL to OGG and ITO.
We had one ferry from MHR to HNL once.

Is there any plane that can go non stop HNL-Europe? I saw a picture of a Hawaiian DC-8 at Zurich and I didn't think that was possible.

The HAL DC-8s went everywhere and were hardly home! The flight you saw was more than likely a chartered flight.

Airline I used to work for did a few charters off the west coast to Hawaii and island hop on across the Pacific with 727-200's. The aircraft were aux tank equipped and always went out max fuel and very limited payload/passenger load. Eastbound legs were less critical but still very heavy.

Back in '94, on the way past LAX (Tuesday, 8am) at the Hawaiian terminal (looking on from Sepulveda) was an Hawaiian DC-9-30. What it was doing there and where it was headed was beyond me.
It's the only time I've ever seen a Hawaiian DC-9 at a west coast passenger terminal. Go figure |

Honolulu (HNL) to London (LHR) is 6,295 Nautical Miles.
The 747-200/300/400 and SP along with the MD-11 can all make it fairly easily as well. Although the MD-11, 747-200 and 747-300 would have some trouble making the return trip due to the prevailing winds. The A-330-200 and all A-340 variants can also make the hop both ways without any problem. No airline has ever offered scheduled non-stops between these city pairs. TIA used to fly several 727-100 flights from Oakland to HNL back in the late 60s.

A few years back, LH flew an A 340 non-stop from Frankfurt to Honolulu. I don't remember what the particulars were, but I do remember the governor of the State of Hawaii was on board.

Need more information about this one. How many 727 Trans International operated? Why they stopped serving between Oakland-HNL? (Is it because of competitors offer such 747, DC-10, any bigger plane?) Was the service as regular or just a character? Seat configruations? All ecomony seats? Any stop over enroute either way to refuel? I doubt that such 721 can make whole way at o |
