Default PIA (Pakistan Airlines) Order 8 777's!

From Yahoo! News:

KARACHI, Pakistan - Pakistan's national airline on Wednesday inked a US$1.4 billion agreement to buy eight Boeing 777 passenger aircraft over the next six years, the company said.

The Pakistan International Airlines' order includes two 777-200LR (long-range), three 777-200ER (extended-range) and three 777-300ER (extended-range) aircraft for long-haul routes, according to a statement.

The acquisitions are part of a US$2 billion fleet development plan announced earlier this year. The agreement was signed by PIA's managing director Ahmed Saeed and Boeing Co. official Miguel Santos in the southern port city of Karachi.

Delivery of planes would begin in February 2004 and continue through 2008, the statement said.

To help the funds-starved airline, the Pakistani government in August approved a US$150 million financial package to revamp its fleet. Additional financing would come from the U.S. Export-Import Bank.

Pakistan has been eligible for U.S. financing since Washington lifted sanctions last September in return for Islamabad's support for the American-led war on terrorism.

The national flag carrier currently has a mixed fleet of airplanes from Boeing that includes 707s, 737s, and 747s. It also has some Airbus planes

Personally, I'm glad they finally started their fleet renewal, and I'm also glad that they've choosen the 777 (over the A340)

Any comments?
