Gulf Air in market for smaller planes

Tuesday, July 2, 2002

BLOOMBERG NEWS

MANAMA, Bahrain -- Gulf Air is talking with Airbus and The Boeing Co. about replacing long-haul aircraft, and with Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA about ordering smaller planes as it focuses on shorter routes.

The unprofitable airline wants to replace five Airbus A340 aircraft with A330 or Boeing 767 planes better-suited to operations within the Middle East, Chief Executive James Hogan said yesterday. It wants 70-seat Embraer planes to serve cities such as Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Dubai from base in Bahrain.

"We need to match our aircraft strategy to our network," Hogan said in an interview. "At the moment, we have too many different aircraft types."

Gulf Air, which is owned by four Persian Gulf governments, aims to stem two years of losses and cut debts of $800 million by reducing intercontinental flying. It plans to join a global airline alliance to continue offering tickets to long-haul destinations through partner carriers.

The airline, which operates to 50 cities with 32 planes, including six A330s and nine 767s, said it will reveal in September which aircraft it has chosen and which routes will be served. Services to the United States, Australia and Italy already have been dropped.

Gulf Air is talking to Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam alliances about joining a global network, said Hogan, who became chief executive in May after occupying the same post at Australian carrier Ansett Holdings Ltd. Qatar said in May it will withdraw from Gulf Air to concentrate on developing its own carrier, Qatar Airways

Default Did you know ...

...that Gulf Air was once called Gulf Aviation and operated the BAC - 111 ? True!

I still don't know how this line got away with using the title "Golden Falcon" as a trade mark since that one was owned by Eastern.

I don't know why they got rid of their 767-300s before, and now they're gonna buy more??? They bought the A340 to replace the 767s. I guess the A340s really do suck.

Tony, Eastern did have the name "Golden Falcon Service" but I think Gulf Air just uses the "Golden Falcon" name. I'd have to look into this more to get more answers. Mabey they bought the rights to the name, i dont know.
