Today I heard what I thought were turboprop engines - like a big Herkie or something flying over. I look up and to my surprise it's an American Airlines MD-80 or -90 with big fat jet engines! Now I have never heard a pure jet plane sound like that. Very quiet for such a plane especially compared to the NW DC-9s that still fly here.

Hmmm. (no pun intended) I'm not well-versed in the MD twinjet series, but believe the MD-90 has higher-bypass fans than the MD-80. Hence, the larger nacelle and characteristic hum of very large bypass engines.
