A single engine Piper crashed at a surburban intersection in Dunedin, Florida today with five injured (one serious) and No Fatalities at the time of the incident (10:45AM, EST).
The pilot (a Clearwater Police Officer) took off from Clearwater Airpark 2 miles south of the crash site and reported loosing power shortly after takeoff and was attempting to make it back to the Airpark. When he realized that he wasn't going to make it back, he attempted to land on an semi-unobstructed portion of Patricia Avenue which is adjacent to Dunedin Middle School. His emergency landing attempt was unsuccessful due to a traffic light intersection at Beltrees Avenue where his plane hit two vehicles stopped at the light. A Disaster Responce Team from eight Local Government Agencies as well as FAA and FBI were on scene within fifteen minutes of the incident. The serious injury (an off-duty EMT) was air evac to a Trama I Center and the others land transported to a local area Hospital. Field Operations by all Agencies were completed by 6:30PM, EST Press Coverage reports by local and national press orginizations began at scence and should be on TV by 11:00PM News. With the Residental Neighborhood and a Summer Camp Program of 600 children at the Middle School, a disaster was averted by the efforts of the Pilot
