Default 777 visits ALB

I did not witness it in person, but I did see on the news tonight that an unusual visitor made an unscheduled landing at our little Albany International Airport.

It was a Continental Boeing 777 and I believe it was en route to Hong Kong.

Aircraft of this size and weight are capable of operating from Albany's runways but airliners do not find them economically feasible.

I believe this was the first time a 777 landed at ALB but back in the 1980s we would get a regular summer visitor in a 747SP from either Oman or the United Arab Emirates. A Sheikh would come to bid on race horses at auctions in Saratoga - the plane was part of the "royal flight." I have not seen this one in some time.

Actually it was the inbound flight from HKG. There was severe weather in EWR and the crew was concerned about how long they would have to hold for clearance to EWR, so they put down in ALB and waited for EWR to clear up. It was purely weather related, not mechanical.

Cool

Hong Kong to Newark is a HELL of a long flight!!! How many hours is that?

The longest I've been on a commercial jetliner is Los Angeles to Kansai/Narita - hmm, which is farther?

Yeah we had some pretty bad storms here last night. I had family coming in from Seattle and they delayed and/or cancelled all outgoing and incoming flights out of KJFK and KLGA. Luckily, UAL 24 was one of the last undelayed flights (although they were 37 min late).

No, well, obviously the Continental flight is farther. I meant Kansai to LAX or Narita to LAX. Sorry about that confusion (I'm not that stupid).

A bit of research made me realize that EWR-HKG was actually the third-longest flight in the world, and the trip usually takes 15 hrs. 40-45 minutes.

Oh, so this wasn't current.

I was a little confused.

Think about what your post adds before you dig up a dinosaur like this one.
