Default NEWS : UAL Pilots accept Cost Cutting measures

The board of United Airlines has approved a cost-cutting plan by it pilots who have offered to take pay reductions of 10 percent as part of the carrier's recovery program.

The deal, which also allows United to add more regional jets to its operations, will save the struggling airline an estimated USD$520 million over three years. In return, the company's 9000 pilots will receive stock options and have their current contract extended by 12 months.

In a statement Thursday, United's Chief Executive Officer, Jack Creighton, confirmed that the airline is holding talks with US Airways over code-sharing as part of its recovery strategy.

"In addition to the changes in their compensation, ALPA has agreed to give the company additional flexibility to meet the needs of the airline in the changing marketplace," said Creighton. "The pilots' Master Executive Council has acknowledged the mutual benefits of a possible code-sharing program with US Airways and it has agreed to redefine limitations on regional jets.

"We have been in discussions with US Airways about a possible code-share as part of United's financial recovery plan," he said. "Code-sharing with US Airways would give us access to an additional revenue stream and enable us to continue to improve our service to customers.

"Through our code-share, we would give US Airways customers access to United's worldwide network, improve the feed to our mainline flights and provide our customers access to US Airways comprehensive East Coast network, all without the risks and complications of a merger.

"With the changes on regional jet limits, we can respond to challenges by our competitors, who are flying the customer-friendly small jets in a number of our markets," Creighton added.

The United Board also approved a new reduced pay deal with its non-union management and salaried staff.

Thumbs up

I cannot fully comment until I've received and understood the entire proposal. Once again UA pilots are expressing leadership; industry-leading contract during profitable periods, targeted concessions when appropriate. This is exactly how long-term employee/owners ought to behave to perpetuate an ailing but viable organization.

UAL pilots are only concerned about how much money they can get from the company. They could give a damn about any of the other people working for United. United lost almost all of their mail contracts because the pilots played their games all summer til United's upper management gave them more money than most people thought they would get.
United has closed over two dozen stations in the last few years with many workers losing their jobs. And now the pilots have agreed with the company to add even more regional jets. Anything for the company so long as the pockets of the pilots are lined even more from the workers who's jobs are lost do to their greed.
Once again they are acting like gods. They could give a rats *** about anyone but themselves.

Member of the IAM who only just got a new contract after eight years and now the company wants us to give back what we've been waiting years for.

Question

Scott, if UA pilots are strictly concerned with lining their own pockets, why are we willing to take a pay cut in excess of 10%?
The tentative agreement cancels pay increases for the duration of the contract, extended by an additional 12 months. You realize the RJ issue is complex; many of us across all lines feel UA should "buy and fly", though management will never agree.
I hope you'll take the time to read the tentative before condemning us ALL - remember the rich history of "divide and conquer" mentality from upper management. It still lives, whether it's Jack, Jim, Jerry, Stevie, or Dickie.
Don't fall prey to their tactics; make your own well-reasoned decision.
