Default NEWS : SAA Airbus Order

Africa's biggest passenger jet order has been confirmed by South African Airways which is to acquire 41 planes from European manufacturer Airbus. The deal is worth around USD$3.5 billion.

The order, which includes both wide-bodied and single aisle planes, is part of SAA's fleet modernization plan and deals a blow to Boeing of the US, which has previously supplied the bulk of its aircraft.

The new Airbus planes will gradually replace older Boeing models which are being phased out.

SAA's chief executive, Andre Viljoen, said the company had opted for Airbus as the planes are better suited to African airports and are cheaper to fly.

Thirty-eight of the planes will be bought outright by South Africa's biggest carrier and three will be leased. They will be delivered later this year and the order completed by 2010.

"With this new fleet, we will be able to significantly reduce operating costs and increase our efficiencies, through faster turn-around times and optimal utilization of our crews. The high degree of commonality inherent across our entire new Airbus fleet, will enable us to closely match capacity with demand. This will result in improved yields," Viljoen said.

"The new Airbuses will enable us to carry containerized cargo on our domestic, regional and long-haul services. As a result, these aircraft will be a vital tool in helping SAA to stimulate increased export revenues for the South African economy."

Yeah, I read about this in Airliner World a month ago. Looks like they're even gonna phase out the spanking new 737-800s.

Which all plane types were ordered? The only type I know about is the A340-600 (which I can't wait to see in SAA colors!)

As an officer with Airbus all I have to say is that you should see the size of the kick back that Airbus paid to Andre Viljoen so he could make his decision to go with Airbus. Let's just say that it was hefty.

Airbus aircraft are more sutable for African Airports, what a crock of S***.

Default give me a break

stop crying foul about airbus giving kickbacks for the right for an airline to buy their aircraft....

BOEING DOES THE SAME THING... look at what they did to singapore when boeing bought back their a340s and a330s they ordered.... and gave singapore 777s....

both boeing and airbus give perks to airlines so they can get a nice hold on the market they serve...

like what airbus has started to do in North america with US airways, jetblue, Northwest, etc....
boeing does it with airtran, southwest, alaska, continental, etc...

It all depends on who your fav company is an it might look unfair in another light, but both companies do it...

thats the end of my rant

Here we go! Its the old "Well, the other guy does it too" argument.

BHopper88,

Did you ever consider that carriers like AA, CO and DL went with all-Boeing fleets because these airlines thought that the Boeing aircraft were just better all-round?

Explain this: Why is it that carriers such as Southwest, Westjet, Ryanair and Virgin Express have all-Boeing fleets and happen to be some of the most profitable carriers flying today? Don't you think that maybe these carriers know a good product when they see it? Do you really think that Boeing had to twist their arms?

yea then there is airlines like northwest, jetblue, frontier etc.... that might have gotten a deal from airbus for the a320 family, but after flying them they love them.... ask pilots, some who fly the a320 family love them and dont want to go back....... it all comes down to choice....

but really airbus and boeing are just like car dealers that offer deals to do whatever they can to beat the competition..... its not like southwest or any boeing die hard airline would be offered a320s or whatever for half of a 737 and airbus would buy/trade in those boeing aircraft the airline might not think twice....

BOEING has been known with singapore and a few other airlines that would buy a non delivered order of airbus aircraft to give a good deal on 777s..... and airbus would just deliver those a340s to seattle.....

look im not saying boeing aircraft are worse or superior to airbus or vise versa... but the whole thing is a game/war between airbus/boeing..... but that just me....its my opinion

oh and by the way with ryan air and virgin express boeing UNDERBID airbus for them to operate 737s over a320s... now adays it comes down to price ranther than if a 737 is better than or looks cooler than a a320 or vise versa...

Hey all I know is that Singapore was very unhappy with their A340's and Boeing did them a favor.

As to the Kickbacks comming from Airbus, there will be fewer in the future. Since they have yet to make any money as a company, and the fact that the A380 program will really hurt their books, look for higher pricing and less favorable deals in the future.
