Midwest Express and Skyway Airlines Adopt Simplified Names, Introduce New Corporate Symbol

MILWAUKEE, June 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Milwaukee-based Midwest Express Airlines and Skyway Airlines, The Midwest Express Connection, today announced they are adopting simplified names for both airlines and introducing a new corporate symbol.

Beginning in January 2003, Midwest Express Airlines will become Midwest Airlines and Skyway Airlines will become Midwest Connect.

"We know that some potential customers associate 'Express' with small regional airlines, and also that the word doesn't really say anything about our exceptional service," explained Timothy E. Hoeksema, Midwest Express chairman and chief executive officer.

"This confusion deters travelers from booking on us, resulting in a significant amount of lost revenue -- millions of dollars annually."

He said the name Midwest was a logical choice, because many customers already refer to the airline that way. "Research indicates that travelers positively identify with Midwest, and feel it reflects the friendly and personal style people consider a uniquely Midwestern trait. As we increase our marketing efforts outside the Midwest, it's important that our brand names clearly communicate."

The name Midwest Connect for the airline's regional operations was a similarly obvious choice, according to James P. Rankin, Skyway president and chief executive officer. "As both airlines continue to grow and expand to new areas, it's more important than ever to ensure that customers understand the level of service each airline provides, as well as the tie between the two. Travelers need to know they can easily connect between the mainline and regional carrier, and that the regional carrier provides additional point-to-point connections."

Added Hoeksema: "Midwest Airlines and Midwest Connect. Short and sweet, and always 'the best care in the air.'"

The airlines are also introducing a new corporate symbol that reflects the relationship between the two airlines. The stylized logo -- which will be used on aircraft tails and elsewhere -- includes two wings. One is a solid shape evoking Midwest Express' strength as a company. The other, made of curved lines, symbolizes flight toward the future.

Hoeksema added that the upcoming acquisitions of 25 new Boeing 717 aircraft for Midwest Express and 20 Embraer regional jets for Skyway provide an opportune time to make the changes in a cost-efficient manner. The new aircraft will arrive from the manufacturers bearing familiar but updated liveries with the new name and logo, eliminating much of the costly process of repainting the airlines' fleets. Standardizing all aspects of corporate identity -- from aircraft livery and airport signage to employee uniforms and letterhead -- will begin in early 2003 with the acquisition of the 717s and be largely completed by the time the last Embraer is delivered in 2007.

The announcement regarding the name simplification and new symbol was made on Midwest Express' 18th birthday -- a symbolic "coming of age" and an appropriate time to refresh the airlines' images, according to Hoeksema.

Midwest Express Airlines features nonstop jet service to major destinations throughout the United States. Astral Aviation, Inc. -- its wholly owned subsidiary -- operates Skyway Airlines, The Midwest Express Connection, which offers connections to Midwest Express as well as point-to-point service between select markets on regional jet and turboprop aircraft. Together, the airlines fly to 50 cities. More information is available at http://www.midwestexpress.com.

Default Tail Logo . . .

Although a little irreverent, the "stylized logo" evokes memories of Pac Man. Perhaps they could have stylized the "wings logo" to better effect?

Actually I like this new color scheme. The little M in the logo is a bit extraneous though. It should either have been bigger and integrated better, or eliminated completely. It looks like the corporate know-nothing suits got their fingers into this design... as usual.

Wink

I'm all for color, but these are overdone and too "in your face". Do the interiors have 1970's orange shag carpet? Definitely NOT shagadelic!
What's the deal with the tailfin logo? Kind of looks like Egyptair, isn't their symbol the god "Horus"? Don't quite remember what he was for.

Talking

Nice to know the forum's censor isn't designed in the U.K.
It didn't whine at the word "shag".
