Default Question about MCI.

I know why Chicago-O'Hare is ORD, why Orlando is MCO, and why Spokane is GEG, but why is Kansas City MCI?
I am just curious.

Thanks!
That makes sense.
Isn't Wichita also called Mid-Continent International?

Well atleast airports in the US have codes that make sense! Here in Canada Toronto is YYZ, Montreal is YUL which to me, makes no sense.

Actually MCI purchased the naming rights for the airport. Soon you will be seeing Denver International Airport being Called Qwest International Airport, Atlanta is going with Coca-Cola International Airport, and Seattle is changing its name to Tic Tac SeaTac International.

Chicago will rename O'hare to Boeing Field
Dallas is going to change DFW with SCA (Sentinal Chicken Airport)
Houston will be soon known as Enron Airport, no wait nevermind that one.
London Heathrow will soon be called Virgin International Worldport
and,

Kandahar International Airport will be renamed Bush International

That's right! IAH is "George H.W. Bush Intercontinental".
Khandahar will be known as "George W. Bush Intercontinental".
And to think the Kuwaitis bought A-340's!!
The identifier causing lots of fits is "SUX", aka Sioux City, Iowa.
The townfolk have been pleading w/ the FAA for years to adopt a kinder more reflective code. (not a joke)

Then they're going to get rid of the current Boeing Field and put up a Starbucks, right?

If I remember correctly, the reason why Canadian airport codes begin with Y is because they derived from old Canadian railroad city codes.

Hope this helps.
