I'd have to go with the 707 for a couple of reasons.
1) Out of the ones listed, it's the only one I flew on so I have nothing else to compare it to. 2) It was also my first flight. It was a Pan Am 707 out of Boston that was chartered for a charity event. It took my brother and I for a joy flight and then returned back to Boston. I got one of the last seats and had to sit in the middle. I was petrified because it was first flight and couldn't see that well out the window. It was my one and only 707 flight! |

I'll go with the DC8, the coolest of the classics IMO.
And I don't care that it's not in the poll, I'm still voting for it.

They were all important innovators of varied attributes (except the 720 which would have been an offshoot of the 707 were it not for UA's vanity) but the 707 was clearly the marketing and commercial success. The Comet just might win the contest of longevity; a descendant known as the Nimrod functions as Britain's equvelant to the P-3. The U.S. Navy is considering alternatives to the Lockheed workhorse, and the Nimrod along with the 737NG (!) or remanufacture of the P-3 are considered.
Justin, are you out there to shed some light on the Nimrod??

Tough decision! I voted for the Caravelle, although on another day I might have chosen a DC-8, 720, VC-10 or Comet IV ... or maybe a Convair 880 ?
One of my favorite planes, when I was quite young, was a large die cast Caravelle in SAS livery with wonderful retractable u/c and ventral air stair. I sold the hulk to Elliot Epstein about a decade ago. I hope he restored it nicely! The Caravelle was exceptionally sleek, had those unusual windows, flew with lines all over the world (like the 707), and above all, featured a trend-setting design that benefitted passenger comfort.

Actually, I probably would have voted for the DC-8 were it included in the list. This is one beautiful airplane.

Overall, my favorite classic jetliner would have to be the DC-8, especially the Super 62 series. IMHO, you would really have to judge these A/C by several different criteria to fairly cover this subject.
1) Uniqueness: I would vote for the CV-990A first, with the VC-10 as runner up. I base my opinion on the low production runs of these two A/C and their overall unique configuration and appearance. 2) Longevity: I would vote for the DC-8. I base my opinion on the fact that relatively few "aging A/C" mods have had to be done to these A/C to keep them flying over the years - proving the basic "soundness" and durability of the DC-8 airframe. I also took into consideration how the DC-8 was "stretched" in later years without affecting the longevity of these A/C. 3) Sales: I would vote for the B707/720 first with the DC-8 as runner up. I base my opinion on the production runs of these two A/C. 4) Innovative Design: I would vote for the Caravelle. I base my opinion on the two design features this A/C introduced - rear mounted engines and a ventral airstair. These two features of the Caravelle would influence the design of many short-haul jets, such as the DC-9, BAC 1-11, B727, TU-134, TU-154, F.28, Trident, etc., and is still seen today on the MD-80/90 and B717. 5) First on the market: Hands down, the DH Comet. Even though the Comet did not achieve the sales success it should have, someone had to be the first to try and build a jetliner. For this D.H. and Britain should be commended for having the courage to produce this A/C at the time they did and be able to salvage the Comet program like they did after the early problems with metal fatigue. These are only my opinions based on my knowledge of these A/C. Any comments?? Regards, DC-8 FANJET
