Default Spirit Airlines Question

A friend asked me about Spirit.

1.What are the a/c in their fleet?

2.How many of each?

3.Which a/c is the oldest?

Thanks

Ed

According to the book "Airlines Worldwide" by B.I. Hengi, Spirit Airlines' fleet consists of:

11 DC-9-30s/40s

13 MD-81s/82s

2 MD-87s

I'm not sure which aircraft is the oldest.

Thanks for the info Piston.I would venture a guess and say one of the DC-9's is the oldest. So far I have only seen the MD-82's at ORD.I'm looking forward to getting a pic of their new color scheme.

Thanks

Ed

Spirit is a great airline. I've flown them twice out of Detroit, once to Ft. Myers and once to Tampa and both times I had great service!

I used to work for them before United. At that time they were just beging the fleet change over to MD80s. Aquiring some from China Eastern and some from Europe. When I left they had one MD87 and a few MD81/2/3. They had just gotten rid of the DC9-21s and were getting rid of the DC9-30, they were going to keep a few DC9-40 for a few more years. The oldest 9s were in the 25-26 year old range if I remember correctly. At that point they were also tinkering with the idea of aquiring B757s for the transcon service.

The fleet is always around the 25 airplane mark since I was there, newer ones come and older ones leave.

The owner was super cool he would come to the airport and throw himself on the floor under a desk or counter and hookup or fix the computers. His son would work with us in the summer break from school, either throwing bags on the ramp or with us at the ticket counter and gates. They run a really tight ship no money wasted there. The aircraft even carry coolers with ice from their own ice machines in the belly, so they won't have to purchase bags of ice at the out stations. Normally caterers charge about $25.00 to bring ice out to a plane!

I wish them lots of good luck. Keep up the good work Ned and John and nice choice of colors for the planes!

OH, and yes they would make a great subject for the 1:200 or 1:400 models. original colors, recent colors, they had the first MD80 with a sunbusrt on the tail, the 10 yrs. anniversary colors which are great, and the new colors! Lot and lots of schemes for a small and young airline. Let's see those models boys.
