Default Will we ever see a Southwest 757?

I was thinking about Southwest's route expansions, and wondering whether a 757 might serve them better than the 737 on long-haul routes. Obviously it has higher capacity, but doesn't it also have the lowest (or one of the lowest) seat/mile fuel burn of any jetliner? I may be flying the LAX-BWI route on Southwest soon, and was thinking that I'd much rather it be on a 757 than 737 (although I haven't been on one of their new 737-700s).

I know that Southwest's all-737 fleet is sometimes cited as one reason for their success, but does anyone here think that a some carefully chosen additions like 757s for long haul and crowded routes would be beneficial? Do you ever see it happening? One route I'd love to see on Southwest 757 is SMF-HNL!

OR, what about RJs????

Not a chance... Southwest was offered 757's at a huge discount a couple of years ago (Boeing wanted to keep the production rate steady). Southwest turned them down, saying that if they wanted that capacity, they would have ordered the -900 and retain commonality.

Default Southwest 757

Gotta agree with Steve on this one. The 737 commonality is a huge factor with WN in regards to costs. I doubt you'll see anything but 737's in their fleet.

I'll agree with you guys on this one too. If they need more capacity on heavy routes they'll purchase 737-800s or -900s before they ever look at 757s. Between maintenance, crew, training, and everything else, you just can't beat having one fleet type.

What do you guys think will happen when the 737s are too old and they have to get something to replace them what would Southwest be without the 737

I concur with all of the above. Boeing will milk the 737NG as long as profitable, and eventually create a clean-sheet design. This time a wider fuselage will be employed - they've learned a painful lesson vis-a-vis the A-320 series. If the FAA is successful with domestic airspace overhaul, we may see a speed increase, to follow the footsteps of the Sonic Cruiser long-haul concept. At the present, a 40 to 60 knot increase means little on all but trans-con flights. However, planned efficiencies to facilitate more point-to-point navigation will make this more attractive. Still, the airport environment has a greater chance to enhance or nix the speed advantage.

It is not going to happen.
They are not even getting any -900 or -800s either, because they would have to add another F/A to each one.
The remaining -200s are slowly being retired as more -700s come online.

I too was dreading my trip from SJC (San Jose, CA) to JFK on AA's 737-800, since I was used to the 763's and 752's. Overall, it was fairly comfortable for a transcontinental flight. I doubt that Southwest would abandon the 737 for the 757 at this stage.

I think not, Southwest should keep one one type fleet for a long long long time.

I would venture a guess and say that Southwest will factor 'turn around time' into future considerations of larger aircraft.

I always liked the Idea of pallet loading,
you strap into your seat stow your luggage before you're on the plane, and they load you in like they do "C" containers.
