Well, CanJet will be resurrected in early June!
HALIFAX -- Halifax businessman Ken Rowe announced plans yesterday to resurrect CanJet Airlines, the discount carrier he sold to Canada 3000 Inc. before it went bankrupt last year. Mr. Rowe said CanJet will start selling tickets in early June for summer flights between Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and St. John's -- a move that will end Air Canada's monopoly on scheduled service on several key routes in Eastern Canada. "What we want to do is just give an alternative choice to people that live around here like myself," said Mr. Rowe, the chairman and chief executive officer of IMP Group Ltd. Michel Leblanc, the former chairman of Royal Aviation Inc., is also planning to launch a new airline this summer under the name JetsGo. Analysts say the airlines could introduce too much capacity at cut-rate prices into a fragile aviation market, impairing Air Canada's efforts to return to profitability. But Mr. Rowe said CanJet's fares won't be as low as they were the last time around, when Air Canada, Canada 3000, Royal and CanJet were undercutting each other to win market share. "We're not going to have silly prices. We've got to cover our costs, but because we've got much lower costs [than Air Canada] we hope to be able to at least inject some reasonable alternatives," Mr. Rowe said. CanJet will operate about 24 flights a day this summer on four Boeing B737 aircraft, Mr. Rowe said. They are some of the same planes CanJet used in its first incarnation in 2000. Former chief operating officer Mark Winders is returning to run the airline.
