US Airways, ALPA Reach Agreement on Regional Jets
ARLINGTON, Va., April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways and the Air Line Pilots Association, International reached a final agreement today that would increase the number of regional jets the company can operate within its US Airways Express network from 70 to 140. The additional aircraft may have up to 50 seats.

``This is a critical first step in helping US Airways strengthen its competitive position on the East Coast,'' said US Airways President and CEO David Siegel. ``My congratulations to the negotiators for their efforts in reaching this important milestone.''

``The agreement addresses both the pilots' and the company's needs,'' said Captain Chris Beebe, chairman of the US Airways unit of the Air Line Pilots Association's Master Executive Council. ``ALPA and Company negotiators worked effectively together and produced an agreement that resulted in unanimous approval by the US Airways' pilots' ALPA leadership.''

If US Airways is going to survive by its comprehensive service of the Eastern US, then this is a move in the right direction. With the evolving travel market focusing more on frequency, using mainline aircraft on many of US Airways flights is just uneconomical. Lets hope that the airline weathers this storm and rebounds strongly.

Thanks for posting the article Gearboy. It's a great followup to our discussion a while back when Siegel first showed up at US. I'm glad to see that the RJ deal got approved. The only thing I'm skeptical about is what did management have to give ALPA in order to get the deal done? I'd love to know what concessions were part of the deal.

Good to hear from you Gearboy. Hope all is well with you.

Question

Hmmmm, perhaps the exchange was a win-win lesson for both USAirways and ALPA? What a concept!

Question

Are these going to be operated within the mainline fleet structure? If so, I will be interested to see what this will mean for carriers like Mesa, PSA II(or is it 3?), and Allegheny.
