Hawaiian Airlines will begin daily 767 service from SMF to HNL starting June 7.
I can't wait!

I can't imagine the Sacremento market being able to support a daily 767 flight to Honolulu. I wuld imagine it would be more suited for either a couple times weekly 767 or Aloha's 737 services to the mainland.

Thanks for the info. Jeremy! (Nice meeting you at SMF this last Friday!)
I was just telling my wife, as we were sitting in SMF this last Friday night, that I wondered whether we'd ever see this service. I had previously thought that maybe the Sacramento market might support three or four flights a week (esp in summer) on a 757, or something along those lines. Like Wingman, I also wonder if the Sac market will support this, but I do hope it will be a success! My wife and I go to Hawaii nearly every year, and SMF is ssooooooooo much more convenient than SFO for us.

I'd rather see it make a daily PVD or BOS run!

At first, I thought this was crazy too but now I think it might make it.
The SMF market is a big area that extends as far south as Merced and Modesto, as far north as Redding, as far east as Reno/Tahoe, and as far west as the Bay Area. SMF is a much more convienient airport than OAK or SFO. I believe there are enough people around here that will support it and make it successful. Time will tell. Mexicana is thinking about a SMF-MEX flight this summer too!

There may be a slim chance that this route could be profitable. However, I cannot see a daily service between SMF and Honolulu remaining in place for very long.
Perhaps Hawaiian might be better off with thrice-weekly service. |

For those that are not from the islands, this route was created primarily because of this and its main objective is to drive Aloha Airlines out from the west coast.

Hawaiian is also going to be flying out of ONT. Do you think that will last? Greg |

I try to avoid LAX like the plague. I believe that Hawaiian could be more successful with this route considering the close proximity between LAX and ONT and well as the relatively close proximity between ONT and Orange County. However, as I stated before, I do not believe that daily service is required. Besides, this route will eat into Hawaiian's traffic out of LAX, so hopefully they have taken this into consideration. ONT is quite convenient, but I do not believe that will last forever now that the voters in Orange Country voted down a proposal to turn the former MCAS at El Toro into a regional airport. In addition, new restrictions have been placed on John Wayne Airport, also in Orange County. |

If Hawaiian is starting services to all these cities to send a message to Aloha to stay out of serving the West Coast, should it consider new aircraft purchases? Aloha started using the 737 to Hawaii so it could start services to airports that couldn't handle widebody traffic to Hawaii...Hawaiian is trying to compete to similar markets, but with using the 767. I don't think this stratagy can last. Maybe Hawaiian should order some 737's too, I'm sure Boeing wouldn't mind.

Exactly right! Good points but Hawaiian will most definitely not order a plane that Aloha is flying....that has always been the nature of business here in the islands.

Is Aloha the only airline using narrowbodies on Hawaiian flights? Do any of the majors us 757's to Hawaii?

Yes, AA offers daily 757 flights to and from HNL to SJC and for a while they were also running 757 flights to OGG. UA may offer 757 services from SFO to the islands too but don't quote me on that one. Aroha, oops must be my Japanese accent, Aloha, offers daily 737-700 service from OAK to HNL, OGG, and possibly Kona.

TL925, infact United & American use the 757 on flights to Hawaii now and so does ATA from time to time.
Aloha goes to Oakland from HNL, Keahole, and Kahului (OGG) as well as Las Vegas via Orange County, Oakland.

Hawaiian was planning expansion long before the merger was in discussion. Is it a competitive move against Aloha? Of course it is, but so is it a competitive move against UA, AA, CO and everyone else. Hawaiian appears to have it's sights set on becoming the #1 carrier between the mainland and Hawaii. And, I'm all for it.
The employees and management of HA have worked hard to rebuild their airline into the fine carrier it is today. Their cabin service has been the best on these routes for several years and now with new equipment it's even better. There are rumors that 757's are being considered, and for certain routes, it probably makes sense. But the 737...never. Not because Aloha flys them, but because they are simply to small to make money given the yields on these routes. And, if you want to have some fun, go stand at the gate in OAK and look at the reaction of passengers as they arrive at the gate and see the size of the aircraft they're boarding for their flight to Hawaii. Finally, I'm told that advance sales from both SMF and ONT are incredible.

Aroha also flies to LAS via OAK. Unfortunately you leave at nearly midnight and get into Sin City like around 01:30 in the morning. No tanks!
