Exclamation Vintage plane crash-lands in Seattle's Elliott Bay

Vintage plane crash-lands in Seattle's Elliott Bay

SEATTLE - A vintage Boeing plane made an emergency crash landing in the waters of Elliott Bay right near Salty's Restaurant in West Seattle Thursday afternoon, jolting many witnesses on shore.

The incident happened right around 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Several witnesses said the large silver four-propeller plane, a vintage 1940 Boeing 307 Stratoliner, was flying from the downtown area toward Boeing field when it made a sudden turn into the water.

If it was closer to Apr.1st, I'd think this was a joke.
This really sucks, the old Strat was pristine. I sure hope someone will restore her again, damn.
Hey Nick, have you heard anything?

Oh, man! The fact that it was the last flying Stratoliner makes it really sad.

Looks like a survivable accident, hope nobody was injured. Hard to tell if this was loss of control or engine difficulty. What a beautiful bird, though. It should be restored again!

I remember reading when this restored Stratoliner flew, that it had some sort of electrical or mechanical glitches. I also recall that they probably would not risk flying this bird again...
Wonder what happened...

Just goes to show that certain planes still live up to there image. I have read many articles about this and superstratocruisers being mtc nightmares.

I hope that this is not a replay of the famous EAL L1011 crash
back in the 70's when the pilots were preoccupied with a landing
gear problem and flew into the everglades, as it was reported
that they were circling due to a gear problem... CNN reports that
the plane may be salvageable! Lets all hope it is...

Default Elliott Bay

The plane landed in Elliott Bay about two miles from Boeing Field.

That would make it salt water.

Yikes, the salt corrosion is gonna be pretty bad. Can they restore it in this state?

They restore aircraft up in Everett about a 1/2 mile from Boeing. When I was there a few years ago they where working on a older fighter. There is a WWII Corsair in the Museum of Flight that restored at the same place. I believe the Corsair was sitting on the bottom of Lake Washington for many years.
Also, the first 727-100 is also there. It was flown by United Airlines and donated to Boeing and to be put into a new museum when built. They(Boeing) also have the very first 747 ever built(Boeing owns it). I was told the new building would be built around this aircraft.
