I need to know whether some of you still have no problem to visit in copit after it landed and docked in? I am somewhat concern and hope not to regret for not sit on the capt seat of MD-11 back in 96 because I was in tight time. This time when I get a chance to ride on a MD-11 and I am going to sit in that seat and get a picture of me on a MD-11 copit. Reason of asking is because since that stupidities of 9-11-01 incident may have banned that opportunity?

John,
Can't hurt to politely ask. I'm not sure of the best time to ask though.

Visiting the cockpit is generally permitted on US carriers while at the gate and the engines are not operating. Of course, this is at the discretion of the captain and his/her crew.

In December 2001, I managed to get some photos of an Air Canada A319 cockpit after we landed in YVR.

I had the immense opportunity to fly in the jumpseat of a 732, last summer. What an amazing experience! I think think the best time to ask would be (of course) after the aircraft was deplaned, with the exception of the crew. But who knows?? I know kids are still allowed to see the cockpit after a flight, but I don't know about sitting in the captains seat.... quess it is the pilots call! I also have a freind (ex RAF pilotin hhis 80's) who was in the cockpit of the Concorde(back in the 70's), while it was in flight....Amazing photos! I really hope that you get your chance. It would be a thrill!
It never hurts to ask though! Good luck! ![]() |

I took a picture of a Concorde's cockpit, while in flight (before Sept. 11th).

Make sure to be very nice to the lead flight attendant. I usually ask the flight deck crew if there accepting visitors before I will allow any one access to the pointy end of the airplane.
A new Gemini release handed over to me will get you quick access one my flights. ![]() Bill G

I got to ride in the jump seat of a British Airways 747-400 G-CIVN - yep the same one as the GJ model, but different Holland tail - from London Gatwick to Denver International about a yaer and a half ago. It was the best.
I saw my friend at BA last weekend and we talked about that and he told me that I was lucky because it would never happen for a very long time if ever again. For BA things changed before 9/11 when a passenger stormed into a 744 cockpit over Africa a little over a year ago, forcing the plane into a dive with the crew able to recover it within seconds of dissaster. I will ask him and a pilot froend of mine if they allow visits on the ground anymore. Bigger bmmer was that my wife gave me a few hours of flight sim time at UAL flight training center in the 777 for my birthday last July. After 9/11 they stoped the pilot for a day program and gave us our money back. That sucked big time for me. |

One interesting cockpit I visited was several weeks ago at the Southwest maintenance base at DAL- they had a 737-300 undergoing what they call a "quarter-D" check which left it about a quarter stripped out. Southwest, however, is fitting HUDs to all of their 737s (except the -200s) to allow full Cat III landings and so this particular -300's cockpit was pretty stripped out- you could even see outside beyond the forward bulkhead where the weather radar is mounted from INSIDE the cockpit. This was an early model -300 and the mass of wiring is simply astounding.

When I went to New Zealand June of last year I went to the cockpit of a 737-200 with hushkits while in flight first and probably last of doing that! New Zealand was the first place I had done this. The other plane I saw in flight was the ATR 72-500.
Only time I flew a commercial airliner was with United Explorers when I was making a shallow approach into Denver Stapleton oh and that was at United's Flight Training Center (TK). B-727-200 Simulator! Last edited by Chansen; 03-27-2002 at 02:18 PM. |

Sat in the left seat of a USAF KC-10.
I even got to take it off from SFO and make two landings! Of course, all of this was from a KC-10 Simulator based at Travis AFB. It was the ride of a lifetime as far as I'm concerned though! |
