Hawaiian Airlines officials announced tonight that it is no longer going forward with the proposed $200 million merger with Aloha Airlines.
This ends hopes of a merger between the two interisland airlines. The airline said in a statement that it had been asked by TurnWorks, the Houston firm organizing the merger, to consider extending an April 18 outside date for completing the merger and Hawaiian said it has decided not to extend the date. Hawaiian spokesman Keoni Wagner said the statement means the merger is off. Wagner said last night that one of the considerations for Hawaiian not going forward with the merger was "the expense of getting the deal done." A spokeswoman for TurnWorks said tonight that "TurnWorks is extremely disappointed."

Suddenly the 717 market is flooded with ex-TWAs again?
Not good for the 717.

Hawaiian and Aloha airlines merger off
March 17, 2002 Posted: 10:48 AM EST (1548 GMT) HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) -- The planned merger of Hawaiian and Aloha airlines, which generated widespread opposition from employees, stockholders and consumers, has been called off, a Hawaiian spokesman said Saturday night. "It's clear that the parties will not be able to satisfy the conditions of the merger agreement," Hawaiian spokesman Keoni Wagner said. Aloha and Hawaiian unveiled the proposed merger in December, saying it was necessary for the financial health of both companies. A deadline of April 18 had been set for its completion. Those opposed to the merger of the state's only two interisland air carriers said it would lead to higher prices and poorer service. Class action lawsuits seeking to block the merger were filed in state court on behalf of several groups, including employees and shareholders. Additionally, Hawaii's three Republican state senators asked the U.S. Justice Department to block the deal. Hawaiian Chairman John W. Adams announced earlier Saturday that the airline rejected a deadline extension requested by TurnWorks Inc., a Texas-based company working to merge the two carriers. In response to the announcement, Aloha spokesman Stu Glauberman said, "Aloha is aware of the decision by Hawaiian Airlines, and will issue comments at the appropriate time." "TurnWorks is extremely disappointed," the company said through a public relations firm in Hawaii. The merger was to create a new company, Aloha Holdings Inc., to be headed by Greg Brenneman, TurnWorks' chairman and chief executive. He helped lead Continental Airlines to its turnaround as its president and chief operating officer.

I wasn't particularly enthralled with the idea of both of them merging anyway.
I wonder what Aloha will do now. They're one of the few airlines still operating 737-200's; some convertible open top versions. Maybe they'd consider the 717. Then again they have all those new 737-700's they're using for the John Wayne/Las Vegas run so maybe they'll stick with 737 NG's. Who knows. |

I too was not to pleased with the merger. If not for anything, I just liked seeing Aloha around. I flew on one of their 737-200 and fortunately for us, it was the convertible type.

If anything, all this whole thing did was bring the issues to the surface regarding our interisland airlines and their ways.
I knew for sure that this could never work out because our two interisland airlines (especially Hawaiian) could never agree on anything and the fact that they were rivals for many years and still are, does not help this situation any. AND... regardless how this thing turns out, Mr. Brenneman still gets PAID from his company (Turnworks Inc. $1.6M/Yr.) as well as Hawaiian/Aloha (split $100,000/Mo.).

Those Texans should stay from Hawaii. They would have just ruined everything. Glad to see the merger off.
Now that my Hawaiian collection is looking good, I would have hated it to become a retro livery. |

Here's my opinion on this whole merger thing.....
Hawaiian made an EXCELLENT call by pulling out of this merger. Here's why: 1.) Aloha has posted losses after 9/11, while Hawaiian posted a profit, although Hawaiian made more of profit prior to 9/11. Why ruin something that works? This merger will benefit Aloha employees rather than Hawaiian. 2.) If I was an employee of Hawaiian with 40 years of service, and an Aloha employee comes in with 41 years of service, with my hard work with Hawaiian, why should this Aloha employee have more seniority over me? I'd be really pissed! (By the way, I have source that works for one of the airlines and she said that 2 of Aloha's Flight Attendants had more seniority than Hawaiian's #1 that was on the proposed "merger" list, this is one example.) Again, this merger will benefit Aloha employees rather than Hawaiian. 3.) This is like Microsoft and Apple. Bill Gates would never merge his much more profitable company with Apple. (blow 'em out of water and take all the lion's share, right?) Although I'm very loyal to both airlines, in the past year, Aloha has operated how Hawaiian did before, expanding more than they can handle. Hawaiian had a grip of the interisland market back in the 80's, they expanded Mainland and South Pacific, and was in Chapter 11, but the re-focused and surfaced out. Aloha on the other hand, took advantage of this and lead in the interisland market, but they expanded, and now, it's the opposite they're (Aloha) is paying for it. Aloha is the one that's in bad financial condition, I would hate to see them fold up, but because of economic conditions worldwide and here in the islands, I have a feeling, unless they just re-focus on serving interisland, they're gonna sink....We'll have to wait and see.... |
