My English teacher(s) will be very disappointed in me.

They haven't committed to anything yet, and plans could change depending on demand & other factors.

I can keep dreaming, but I would rather see more airlines go with the 747-8....

"We have commercial momentum on A380, we will get additional customer" Bregier continued. "We have to get more customers, and convince them there is much more upside than downside to the A380."

The article does not say anything about a confirmed launch. It was a lot of smoke and mirrors for investors. The above statement basically says they are still trying to convince airlines.

Speaking of the A380, I just booked my first trip on one with BA LAX to LHR.

You know, was amazed by Marcus' announcement that Gemini will release the 747-8i in 200 scale later this year and was a little disappointed that none of the US carriers purchased the 747-8i. Only have Lufthansa, Air China, Korean Air and Transaero showing some love for the old Queen of the Skies.

The Transaero order is currently in jeopardy as they go through financial troubles.

I think Boeing's initial strategy on the 787 was correct - long haul, twin engines, point-to-point. Twin engines will be around long after the quads are gone, and as great as the B 747-8i and A380 are, they are probably the end of the line - an A380 neo maybe - an A380-900, never. Later, Doug

KLM/AF and LH already expressed their interest in a larger A380 a year ago (or so).

OK... An A380-900 probably not. It'll take more than KLM/AF and LH to decide the matter. If the middle eastern airlines buy in, maybe. Later, Doug

Awesome news to hear that you are finally going to fly on the A380!

When you return from your trip, please update the DAC on your A380 experience. Always nice to read what other DAC members experience on this super jumbo.

Wishing you a safe journey on the big bird! Cheers! T7

We are leaving May 2. Actually connecting at LHR to fly onto Munich. May 4 we are picking up a new BMW at the factory and will drive around Germany, France and Austria for 2 weeks. I'll have lots of pictures to post.

"how many had the 767-400ER.... ?" Good point - Continental and Delta ordered 37 total, and that was the end of production - I doubt Boeing recouped costs of development, and in hindsight probably regret launching the -400. Tell you what - I'll bet you 10 euros that the A380-900 never goes into production. Over, Doug

tough the number of airlines which are interested in the 389 might be the same as the amount which were interested in the 764 (until now)...these two planes cannot be compared 1:1 - the engineers of the A380 already had a larger version in their minds from the beginning on. if not so they wouldn't have put such gigantic wings and stabs on the plane.

the 764 is basically a 762 with a stretched fuselage - and it was sufficient for the -300, but are you sure the economics the -400 offered were sufficient for the airlines? didn't they just put some wingtips on it compared to the -200 and -300

when we have a look at Airbus: all twin-aisle planes (except 350 an 380) share the same fuselage diameter. the A300 and the A310s wings are pretty the same, but when they developed the 330 they chose another wing/wigbox design. maybe that was the problem at Boeing...except the longer struts on the MLG and the wingtips nothing really changed. even not the engines. at least Airbus wants to put new engines to their A380 stretch (if built). there are even speculation of modifying the wings.

if air transportation further increases in the rush hours the manufacturers will have to offer something to make it possible for the airlines to put some of the daily flights together on one plane - and what do you think that plane will be? when you have two aircraft which offer the same performance and specs concerning fuel consumption, etc... would you really go for the one with less seats? what you also forget, is that if you compare 380 and lets say 779 for example: putting 10 abreast in a T7 is less comfortable than having them in an 380. no operator has cosen the maximum capacity for the 380 - simply because you can offer the same seating like an all economy 747 but at a way more comfortable level. and you also are able to increase the level of comfort for premium-customers on 380 flights which make most of the profit for the airlines.

leaving all Boeing/Airbus preferences aside, on LHR-JFK or LHR-LAX - what would you rather like to fly on as an economy passenger: 10-abreast on the A380 or 77W / 9? i'd bet you'd go for the more comfortable one, like i would.

the -900 will come, if not in 5 years than in 9 or 10.

So I guess we can anticipate a 100+ plane order for either model or a combo of the two from Emirates, right?

At this point, Airbus might as well rename itself:

Airbus Industries - a division of Emirates Airlines

Absolutely. Thanks to the global economy, the middle east airlines are sucking the life out of the European legacy carriers which may have been a bit bloated, comfortable, and unaccustomed to real competition, but something about Emirates, Etihad and Qatar stinks. All the oil, money, and state sponsorship makes life sweet and too easy for them. I want nothing to do with 'em, but I won't fly Lufthansa to Germany either, when an American carrier will get me there just as well for $500 less. Outta here, Doug

That's a lot of wishful thinking here. I am absolutely convinced, the A380 program is a slowly dying program, like the A340 was years ago.

It was a promising aircraft when first revealed but turned out to just being a status symbol and not being developed for the needs of the airlines. The 777 program, also being aesthetically a lame duck, was the right aircraft for the right time and, surprisingly, still is.

The A380 will die slowly but surely.

I thought they were going to stop building 380's by 2028, as demand is not high enough.

Sure, that makes sense when one airline has 100 orders, while the manufacturer has thousands of orders by more than 100 carriers..

B747-400 - 230ft in length

And show me another airline that is single-handedly keeping an aircraft model in business like Emirates is with the A380.

By the way, you need to learn what the term 'sarcasm' means
