Default Engine failure prompts emergency landing

Engine failure prompts emergency landing
'This thing just came in, spur of the moment'
March 4, 2002 Posted: 5:26 PM EST (2226 GMT)

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The failure of an engine forced an American Airlines passenger jet to make an emergency landing Monday, shortly after taking off from Los Angeles International Airport.

The airport was also hit with another security screening scare Monday morning.

The Boeing 767 landed safely at 8:50 a.m. PST (11:50 a.m. EST), about 10 minutes after it left the airport. Flight 76 was en route to Washington-Dulles Airport, according to American Airlines.

"It had engine failure and landed without incident," Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operations officer Larri Dillard said.

A Los Angeles city fire official, Battalion Chief Robert Franco, said airport officials were given about three minutes' notice that the jetliner needed to return.

"This thing just came in, spur of the moment," Franco said.

Fire personnel inspected the plane after it landed and escorted it to the terminal, where it was connected to the jetway. It wasn't immediately clear whether passengers were being allowed off the plane.

The twin-engine, wide-bodied jet, like all jetliners, is designed to fly safely even if an engine goes out.

'Just another day in America'
The emergency landing came several hours after hundreds of passengers in an LAX ticketing area were evacuated when security screeners saw the outline of a grenade inside a passenger's bag. The item turned out to be a gag gift, according to a government source in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded outside Terminals 2 and 3 for more than 3-and-a-half hours. Passengers were let back into the terminals about 9:30 a.m. PST.

"It's just another day in America," laughed Flemuel Brown, a Philadelphia music producer on his way home from last week's Grammys. "I'm just glad everybody is all right."

The affected terminals serve Alaska, American, Horizon, TWA, Air China, Air Canada, Hawaiian Air and Northwest airlines, among others. The American flight that made the emergency landing was not affected; it left from Terminal 4.

On Thursday, an unplugged metal detector triggered the evacuation of five LAX terminals, delaying 400 flights and forcing about 10,000 passengers to be rescreened.

What is it with fire officials in LA? This one was from a few years back:

On the 10 o'clock channel 9 news there in LA, a story was aired regarding a single engine plane (identified as Aero Commander) went down short of the Burbank airport. Both people on board survived. The pilot was lucid as he was being cut out of the wreckage and said he ran out of fuel over Eagle Rock and was trying to make Burbank.

Remarking about the lack of fire, the Fire Marshall in charge of the rescue said, "They are just lucky there was no fuel on board."

Thumbs down Dumbass

What kind of a dumbass would try to bring a fake grenade on board a plane in these troubled, nervous times? He ought to be dealt with severely!
