One dead, several injured

A flight attendant was killed in the accident.

Police said she was thrown from the plane through a door that burst open as the aircraft hit the water.

Her body was found one kilometer (0.6 mile) downstream from the wreckage.

Seven other people on board were seriously injured.

The plane had been on a flight from the tourist island of Lombok to the city of Yogyakarta, about 25 kilometers (14 miles) west of the crash site.

There were six non-Indonesians on board, including a Norwegian, two Italians, a Dutch national, an Australian and a Thai. None was seriously injured.

The plane was sitting sideways across the river on the outskirts of Serenan village, which is home to about 2,000 people.

Its engines were torn off, but the fuselage appeared to be undamaged except for minor scratches and dents.

'Miraculous'

Passengers say the plane swayed violently during its descent
Investigators on Thursday were searching through the Boeing. They said the plane's black boxes would have to be analyzed before the causes of the accident can be determined.

Another passenger, Kurniata, described as "miraculous" the actions of the pilot, who managed to land the plane on the river, avoiding nearby villages.

"I give a big thumbs up to the pilot and the crew," said Kurniata, who like many Indonesians, uses one name.

Donny Supranra, another passenger, said the pilot told the passengers to brace themselves for an emergency landing moments before it went down.

"The pilot did not tell us we were going to land on a river. But it was such a good decision and the landing was so smooth," he said.

"But at least for the next few days, I'm taking the bus."
